I’ve studied US drone strikes, I wrote a book called “Drones and Terrorism,” and this Caribbean strike is different. Lethal fire at a non-threatening target in a non-hostile environment on purpose when other means, such as capture, were easily doable, and without even attempting a legal rationale.
I served 23 yrs on active duty, USAF. I’m pretty sure the US military executing civilians in international waters who did not present an imminent threat to any US vessel…is a crime. These orders should have been rejected by SOUTHCOM as illegal orders.
This is important. The first 24 hours of press coverage fumbled the ball. But the US just murdered 11 people in international waters. Analogies to the US’s (highly suspect, morally and legally) targeted killings of suspect terrorists don’t work. This crossed their own lines, and they know it.
