It's just gatekeeping. Linux is used in over 90% of web servers and SteamOS already normalized it on consumer devices. Not seeing Linux hipsters running LFS / custom kernels.

It goes a bit beyond that: Byung Chul-Han argues that Hegel is _incapable_ of understanding Buddhism because his theory of history and ontology makes Christianity the "highest" form of religion. Hegel's thought is incapable of apprehending Zen accurately.
Frank Davies (@fdavies93.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah. I'm pretty sure if you installed XFCE / Cinnamon / Budgie with a Windows skin you could even make it look and feel like Windows for people who really hate change. Budgie probably being the closest to modern Windows.

It's really annoying how the only lightweight #selfhosted options for viewing #git repos use PHP / Perl / CGI like it's 2005. This gives me trauma flashbacks of being a MyBB forum admin as a teen. #SelfHosting

Or you could try Bazzite, which is a Fedora distro designed specifically for gaming.
Frank Davies (@fdavies93.bsky.social) reply parent
One of the lightweight Fedora spins like XFCE might be good. Fedora is rock solid because it's the consumer variant of RedHat Enterprise Linux. XFCE is about as light as you can get with a relatively normal desktop experience.

Not sure what "better" means. Certainly, many amazing companies have been created with a "cheaper" strategy. But most profits in an industry generally go to the more expensive things. Here's why, and also some numbers about that:

It's profoundly saddening to read that AP will no longer be assigning or running book reviews because readers don't engage with them enough and they take too much effort to plan and assign. People complain about critics as gatekeepers; wait until all that's left is marketing.

Suspect that both Google and media outlets - who make money from CTR - are telling the side of this story that makes them look good. Neither is particularly trustworthy. "It's difficult to get someone to understand something when their paycheck depends on not understanding it."
Frank Davies (@fdavies93.bsky.social)
Google claims that their AI summaries don't affect click rates. They're telling the truth. However, the reason it's true for me is because my content is getting more impressions, so the lower CTR is cancelled out. This is... meh. #google #ai #tech #blog #data

I live on this island off the coast of Fujian which you may have heard of. You can get a biandang (rice box with vegetables and meat) for around 100 NTD or $3 USD. To compare, buying a pack of raw chicken breast is 80 NTD. Dining out is often cheaper, often like 20% more expensive than cooking.

One thing I like about Buddha as described in the Pali Canon is that he talks to his followers casually: "Monks, a monk knows when he is going 'I am going'; he knows when he is standing 'I am standing'; he knows when he is lying down 'I am lying down'..." Would tune in to this podcast. #buddhism
