It's just gatekeeping. Linux is used in over 90% of web servers and SteamOS already normalized it on consumer devices. Not seeing Linux hipsters running LFS / custom kernels.

It goes a bit beyond that: Byung Chul-Han argues that Hegel is _incapable_ of understanding Buddhism because his theory of history and ontology makes Christianity the "highest" form of religion. Hegel's thought is incapable of apprehending Zen accurately.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure if you installed XFCE / Cinnamon / Budgie with a Windows skin you could even make it look and feel like Windows for people who really hate change. Budgie probably being the closest to modern Windows.

One of the lightweight Fedora spins like XFCE might be good. Fedora is rock solid because it's the consumer variant of RedHat Enterprise Linux. XFCE is about as light as you can get with a relatively normal desktop experience.

fwiw this kind of output is not *impossible* for a human writer - many journalists can publish 2-3000 words a day - but it's unlikely for someone who doesn't make their living by writing

I use RSS to follow a blog. Imagine my surprise to find the author writing a 2500-word article every day! On clicking through found it was AI slop with a quick edit by the author, and so was most of the content since 2021. I have now removed this blog from my RSS feed. #AI #AISlop #writing #blog

So, I was getting coffee and one of these monstrosities walked in. This is a giant centipede. It's 30cm long. It has painful venom and will bite. One of the other customers stamped it out and kicked it into the street. I am always surprised by how fast people here will dispatch bugs. #asia #china

You can easily get started with trash hardware or a Raspberry Pi. Linux needs less than half a gb of RAM to run acceptably.

As a control freak, I love WMs, especially AwesomeWM, which is scriptable. (Actually the reason is more that I like to build up my config over a long period of time and scriptable tools let me do that.)

PSA: Python no longer behaves the same way in #Vercel Node 22.x images as Node 18.x. If you are using 'pip install -r requirements.txt' you'll now need to install in a venv and use pip3. Took me a while to figure out last night. #DevOps #Python

Most of the systems I use are either Debian or Fedora / RHEL based - on my laptop I just can't deal with Debian being good for 1 year and stale for a year. I wish they'd move their release cycle up to 1 year instead of 2.

Suspect that both Google and media outlets - who make money from CTR - are telling the side of this story that makes them look good. Neither is particularly trustworthy. "It's difficult to get someone to understand something when their paycheck depends on not understanding it."

Google claims that their AI summaries don't affect click rates. They're telling the truth. However, the reason it's true for me is because my content is getting more impressions, so the lower CTR is cancelled out. This is... meh. #google #ai #tech #blog #data

As far as I know the major costs for restaurants in the West are rent and labor. These are both way cheaper in Asia, and restaurants can get bulk / commercial discounts on ingredients. So eating out is cheap. tl;dr economics has weird outcomes

I live on this island off the coast of Fujian which you may have heard of. You can get a biandang (rice box with vegetables and meat) for around 100 NTD or $3 USD. To compare, buying a pack of raw chicken breast is 80 NTD. Dining out is often cheaper, often like 20% more expensive than cooking.

One thing I like about Buddha as described in the Pali Canon is that he talks to his followers casually: "Monks, a monk knows when he is going 'I am going'; he knows when he is standing 'I am standing'; he knows when he is lying down 'I am lying down'..." Would tune in to this podcast. #buddhism

My cat tries to scam me out of food. We have an automatic feeder that dispenses at 6am, noon, 6pm, and midnight. I wake up at 6am and every day he is gesturing to his empty food bowl and crying. Everyone knows you already ate, enough with the theatrics. #cats
