Ideally, this development would involve a group of experienced and beginner users giving regular feedback on tools and workflow, mostly identifying speedbumps.
Having put some more work into using Inkscape, my sense right now is that it's got a good foundation and some tools that are ludicrously powerful, but it's like a year of focused development away from being a really effective tool.
They rather prefer the system that way— unable to find particular culprits. Their blindness will excuse the clumsy atrocities that follow.
The people wondering "how could anyone who isn't a professional escape after a high profile daylight assassination" are forgetting two things: 1. Cops are bad at their jobs 2. The FBI used to be somewhat better at their jobs and were recently gutted by political layoffs

Took me a loooooong time to just get some basic layouts on the page, before I even start messing with them. I've basically never used Inkscape before, so everything is like pulling teeth. But hey, I'm gettin there.
Nice. He's going over the difference between kerning and tracking, and this is a distinction Inkscape doesn't have. It does not appear to be aware of the term tracking. My spanish isn't good enough to know if he's pointed that out.
A snapshot of my life: doing user manual research on one monitor while on the other, I've got a Colombian instructor doing instruction in Spanish (a language I barely understand), and I'm going "yadda yadda yadda" because it's introductory coursework on text layout that I already know.
Maybe I can setup some extra hotkeys that'll help? Hrm.
Like, I want to spit out some text and then pretty quickly adjust tracking, leading, kerning, etc., and it doesn't really seem setup for that.
Alright, I need to check out a tutorial on text layout in Inkscape, because the way I'm trying to use it feels very frustrating.

"Fidel, what's a preconfigured Construction Floor?" It adds a Buddy Cube with the BuildaBot Modifier already setup inside its own collection, and adds a BuildaBot Components collection with an example cutter, already setup with its modifier as well.
I don't need to make an "addon"; I need to make "Assets". I now have a BuildaBot library file you can just dump in your libraries folder, and it adds both modifiers to your modifiers menu (under Martian Graphics), and puts a preconfigured construction floor on your asset shelf.

A Blender Tip for Christmas Day— did you know about the Select Simlar menu? Available from the Select menu at the top of the viewport or the hotkey Shift-G, it allows you to quickly select elements like what you already have selected. It's handy af.
Blender Tip: if you're running a simulation in Geometry Nodes where you need the output geometry but don't need to rerun the animation itself, make sure to uncheck the Cache checkbox in the Physics Tab. Your RAM will thank you. #Blender #GeometryNodes
Blender Tip: Blender has a lot of tools to automate repetitive tasks, and the very easiest of them is the Shift-R, which just repeats whatever the heck you did last. Need a row of things? Make a copy, then Shift-R, Shift-R, Shift-R.

Tools for modeling things that should not be.
For the Component modifier, I'm keeping its upfront options very light. Choose the mode, and the stage. Everything else will be tucked inside a drawer as advanced options, essentially.
I dunno, Plasticity seems cool. I followed its development and tried it out in beta. Seems REALLY expensive for an ardent open source advocate who avoids modeling by hand, predominantly works with procedural tools, and has $3 in the bank, though.
Work continues (and don't mind the music). I got the previews setup to work with Blender's random wireframe color, which really helps you see what's in there. #Blender #ToolDev

Took a bit longer and several experiments to get the Not Easy part working. This test does a raycast for each point aimed inward (based on normal), and looks for either no-hits or collisions with faces pointed toward it. If it detects either, we presume it's not manifold.
So, here's step 1 (the easy part). We're just checking to see if any edges are connected to more than 2 faces, and that triggers our Not Manifold warning. On to the hard part.
I just thought of how to build a full manifold mesh checker, so I guess I'm gonna build that, too. Be handy to have around as a helper tool.
Next up, implementing various preview options in the modifier, which allow you to see the base object and cutters in wireframe mode, as well as the edges of intersection from boolean operations, and a toggle to hide the mesh itself.

The output of some quick modeling with BuildaBot. Nicely formed mesh. Has some shading issues, as boolean shapes often do, which could be easily corrected with some retention loops. Should be immediately printable.
I apparently do not follow anyone who would repost a shooting to my timeline, which is... well, whatever, because I'm kind of a dead-eyed sociopath who can watch nearly any horrible thing. 🤷♂️
Each BuildaBot construction stage involves an Addition, a Subtraction, and an Intersection in that order. Kind of mulling over that order, because add/subtract can often be nullified if they're before an intersect, but the combinations are potentially more interesting/useful in that order.
More testing of BuildaBot, showing how Stages work. Here, I add a cube, give it a BotComponent modifier set to intersect, then add a cone, but it has no effect because the default add happens before intersections. A BotComponent modifier allows me to set it to Stage 2, and Subtract.

Here's what BuildaBot looks like inside. While the last version allowed you to defer operations to a second build stage, this new one supports a totally arbitrary number of build stages that can be allocated at will (needs testing still).
The 3rd version of my BuildaBot modifier is now running. The new version should be easier to manage and more powerful. Now there's a single Component collection, and adding objects makes them Add by default. A BotComponent modifier can be added to switch each piece's mode. #Blender #ToolDev

One collection for parts, and how the parts are used will be determined by a second modifier. You add a BuildaBot Component modifier, and use that to select which operation it gets (otherwise default to add), whether it's deferred, plus some other handy additions (solidify, etc.).
It was a good morning session that exposed a lot of issues with the current workflow for BuildaBot. It was slower and clumsier than I would have liked. And while sweeping, I came up with the design for version 3 coming later today.
