"Adult" anything kind of has that connotation. Think "adult movies" or "adult photography"; it's a euphemism. It usually implies not that something is aimed at adults, or that kids will have a hard time with it, but that kids *should not be allowed it*, usually on the grounds of sexual content.

I found the worst part of depression to be the suppression of emotion; things that made me feel actively sad, even burst out crying, helped to shake that up and remind me I was alive. Things that guide you through sadness and out the other side - ie most "depressing" fiction - are even better.
