Get your vaccine, but also wear a mask. The vaccine does a great job of keeping people out of the hospital & alive, but it doesn't prevent people from catching COVID. Avoiding COVID infections is the only sure way to avoid long COVID. (Also, COVID never left. It's surging now, but it's always here).

It's really disappointing that Portland made Wil Wheaton feel pressure to take his mask off & he caught his first COVID infection at Rose City comic con. The more people who wear masks in public, the more normalized it becomes & fewer people will get sick. Do better, people. Stop spreading COVID.

One final thing. It's odd to see Ezra Klein, a total policy nerd, say Kirk did politics the right way when Kirk had almost no interest in either policy, or the empirical rigor necessary to get policy right. Kirk's approach to politics was 99% culture war rage stoking w/ almost no policy content.

As someone who spent many hours listening to Kirk’s show on AM radio, I would say that he made Rush Limbaugh seem like Walter Cronkite by comparison, in terms of rhetorical tone and empirical rigor. The subtext of every show was “You don’t hate the left enough.”

The vague term "political violence" is used specifically bc of its elasticity. It can be contorted to include a murder (despite the motive and perpetrator being unknown), property damage (committed for life-preserving reasons), or protesters using signs as shields when they are attacked by police.

My parents are over 65 & they are looking into going up to Washington to get their vaccines too, because of how difficult Oregon has made it (yes, I know it's ultimately the fed government driving the chaos, but many states have quickly implemented workarounds to make vaccines accessible to all).

I wrote to my local Oregon state reps offices today about my extreme frustration with the Covid vaccine rollout in Oregon. Senator Kate Lieber's office responded fairly quickly to thank me for bringing it to their attention and said they were reaching out to OHA to get more info.

I never understand when I hear educated people say that COVID *does* have seasonality, because we consistently see waves in late spring/summer and again in winter... But wastewater data shows us that COVID is always around.

I was starting to believe the H5N1 outbreak from dairy cattle was winding down. I was wrong. I hadn’t detected H5N1 in CA wastewater in 6 months, and then 4 samples in a row came up positive. The sequences were all B3.13 (the dairy cattle lineage). 1/

That sounds like the cost of Paxlovid without insurance; I think Covid vaccines out of pocket are around $200 (still outrageous and they should be free, but way better than $1700).

We're heading across the river to Vancouver tomorrow to get our Covid vaccines, because too many people we know have had their appointments canceled in Oregon. The Oregon Board of Pharmacy is requiring prescriptions sent directly to pharmacies, even for people 65+, until ACIP approval. Really sucks.
