Question from the uninformed - is there a reason we typically focus on DC Statehood opposed to retrocession?
fthisfthat.bsky.social (@fthisfthat.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, it's absolutely a good thing - just one that could easily be better here. It's a system that makes a lot of sense when you need to move goods thousands of miles. My issue is that despite that; we still do a ton of cross-country trucking.
fthisfthat.bsky.social (@fthisfthat.bsky.social) reply parent
Wrt SAF - there's not a ton of engines out there fully equipped for it at this point. Airline adoption is still low; but the technology is always being progressed by the major turbine manufacturers. My point there was things are still in the pipeline, but power gen can largely be green with just $
fthisfthat.bsky.social (@fthisfthat.bsky.social) reply parent
If you've got a limited amount of political will to make moves; tackling domestic flight is quite a huge fight and you've either got to tell people they cannot travel or that we need to spend billions (while polluting) to build better train infrastructure.
fthisfthat.bsky.social (@fthisfthat.bsky.social) reply parent
For example, long haul freight trucking in the US is one of our primary goods movers. We already have the infrastructure in place to move the cross-country trucking to trains and even dirty trains are ~25% of the emissions. Electric trucks aren't likely to be adopted here anytime soon.
fthisfthat.bsky.social (@fthisfthat.bsky.social) reply parent
the US to adopt a train for say, New York to LA is very unlikely to ever happen. I don't think that's correct or good, but if you've got to fight an uphill battle somewhere, that may not be the best one to die on. Especially when we're huge carbon contributors elsewhere.
fthisfthat.bsky.social (@fthisfthat.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't disagree with anything you're saying. However, the primary reason that US domestic flying is so high is because the country is massive and spread-out. Trains that don't exist here would be a huge boon in some areas (NE corridor, SoCal, Great Lakes), but construction aside, trying to get

fthisfthat.bsky.social (@fthisfthat.bsky.social) reply parent
Especially given the current climate here. US Aircraft engine manufacturers are targeting EU policy to avoid extra variants. They're also working actively toward SAF, hydrogen, hybrid/electric. Our electricity generation however has gone back to: burn it down and laugh at the future.
fthisfthat.bsky.social (@fthisfthat.bsky.social) reply parent
My original point stands though (for the US) flights aren't the biggest source of our emissions, and in admittedly my US focused original view point: there are bigger fish to unfuck.
fthisfthat.bsky.social (@fthisfthat.bsky.social) reply parent
US Pop 2022: ~333M, UK: ~68M. ~5x 297/29.4 ~= 10x The US does emit more per capita than the UK; but the numbers show that. Percentages are not wrong in either source, the UK obviously leans towards international flight given size and location vs. largely isolated US domestic flight.
fthisfthat.bsky.social (@fthisfthat.bsky.social) reply parent
Please correct me if something is wrong in my numbers here but from both of our sources (2022 numbers, mtco2e): Civil + Mil Aviation: 2.2 (0.54%) International Aviation: 27.4 (6.7%) National Consumption: 406 Aviation: 231 (3.6%) International Aviation: 66 (1%) National Consumption: 6,343

fthisfthat.bsky.social (@fthisfthat.bsky.social) reply parent
European data would suffice too - we can always compare mass per capita that way. I don't see the point in continuing a discussion otherwise.
fthisfthat.bsky.social (@fthisfthat.bsky.social) reply parent
I am not saying Aviation is clean. I am not saying the EU isn't cleaner than the US. I am saying there are better uses of time, money, and political will. You've several times misdirected the conversation to "but also this" and not once backed up a claim. I am fully open to being wrong on usage.
fthisfthat.bsky.social (@fthisfthat.bsky.social) reply parent
I am happy to be wrong if you can present a reputable source. I'm not looking to shill for fossil fuels. The premise of my argument is that aviation is a small impact comparatively with a ways to go on tech to be 'green'. Where as the tech exists for much more carbon limited gen energy production.
fthisfthat.bsky.social (@fthisfthat.bsky.social) reply parent
You're not wrong that it isn't included here however, it's not a major difference. Same report. Columns are by reporting period, last one is 2022, value is millions of metric tons of CO2 equivalent. It's less than a 3rd of the rest of aircraft emissions, just shy of a percent of total.
fthisfthat.bsky.social (@fthisfthat.bsky.social) reply parent
