Interesting article with several great points. I think Microsoft foresaw this even before the introduction of the current gen consoles and they were preparing for changing course long before. Whether we older gamers like or hate the trend, "big" consoles are rapidly losing popularity.

Why is this even a question? Redistricting is done openly so that Trump can consolidate his power. They don't even try to hide it. The same happened in Hungary, Orbán's first act (after replacing the constitution) was to redraw the election maps so that he could remain in power indefinitely.

The problem is that all the bloat and trash games that have 3-4 versions make discoverability for proper games very hard. Go to the new releases section and it's full of shovelware. It's long overdue that Microsoft does something about it. Indie slop should have only one slot each.

There is a difference though. Nowadays there are so many games vying for so much of people's time and attention that they have to make extra effort to keep the playerbase. It's not like the old times anymore, where one static game could keep us engaged for years.

The article has merit but I think there's some mix-up there. People obviously don't want an offline Fortnite or games that are multiplayer live services. But games with offline components should remain accessible even after server closure. Access to the offline components shouldn't be revoked.

That's exactly what they're doing, the next "Xbox" will be a Windows PC so developers will not need to port anything in the future. The dedicated console platform is discontinued.

Game Pass only affects game sales on Xbox consoles, where those sales would be low anyway. On every other platform (including PC with Steam) it has little to no effect. If anything, being on Game Pass helps discoverability of games, which could lead to even higher sales on all other platforms.
Hot take: Microsoft leadership is despicable and the Xbox layoffs are terrible for everyone impacted. But the overly dramatic ragebait of the gaming media and content creators is not one bit better in a climate where the whole industry lays off tens of thousands every year. #doublestandards
This Game Pass obsession from so many players and even some media outlets is not only appalling but also damaging to everyone, both the platform and the developers. Buy your games. Be happy when something's on Game Pass, but never expect or (worse) demand it. This attitude is ultimately harmful.
