So since we’re redefining terrorism to include organized crime, the FBI could have just done a drone strike on Tony Soprano during his trip to Naples instead of wasting all that time and energy on bugs and informants?

I’m on the national brain tumor society mailing list and they are saying nothing about these NIH cuts. Their agenda is the same as last year - pass new legislation. But what’s the point of new funding from Congress if RFK is cutting funding that’s already allocated?

Listen to how Trump talks when he uses the word tariff. He doesn’t make anyone feel dumb. He doesn’t sound like his message was crafted by lawyers and PR people. He sounds like he’s believes what he’s saying. And “tariff” isn’t an academic term! It’s been in the discourse for 200 years!

To be effective as a communicator, you have to be able to shape your message to the audience. The distinction that you’re drawing may be valid, and it may be helpful for some audiences, but it’s not a useful distinction to make when speaking to the electorate as a whole because people will tune out

This is more of a problem of Biden failing to impose his communication style and policy preferences on his staff. Biden himself was much more folksy and probably would agree with you about communicating in a way that connects with voters of all backgrounds.

Hard to believe that Biden himself used that term. Biden knew how to put a folksy spin on these cultural issues (see the completely improbable story he tells about seeing a gay couple as a child and his father telling him that there was nothing wrong with two men loving each other)

I don’t personally like the word “microaggression” - oftentimes it’s used to mean things that come from ignorance or condescension rather than aggression - but lots of people outside of academia use it because it’s the best word they have for something they experience.

Someone close to me, who does not follow politics and is not an academic, finds the term “microaggression” helpful to describe how people interact with her visible disability. Some of these terms escaped the lab and are used by everyday people, especially in some demographic groups

I’m curious what you thought of the video of Pelosi introducing herself and describing her appearance and clothing. It’s discordant and weird, but the people who were mocking her also removed the context - she was speaking to a group of people who are blind. Should she not have described herself?

The founding of Silicon Valley is usually traced to Shockley (inventor of the transistor) being such an epically raging asshole that his staff quit to found Fairchild Semiconductor. There’s no shortage of massive egos in the sciences.

There was an incident a few years ago where software used by Amazon sellers to dynamically change prices lowered prices down to 1 cent. Japan wasn’t impacted because they don’t use fractional cents.

The reality is that you can get into a non-elite school and do very well, maybe even better than peers who went to ivies, but that’s not the message that a lot of kids receive - hence the FP unthinkingly using “college” to mean “highly-selective college”.

The FP is making a huge exaggeration but the anxiety that talented young people feel is real. It’s common to hear middle school kids say they’re doing a sport because that’s what their parents say will give them an edge. In that high pressure environment the “fell short” language is pretty toxic
