super rich people put down large sums of money on what they think will be the next big thing, only for it to crash and burn, but because they're super rich they can do it all over again. you only need to hit it big once to be super rich. past performance is not indicative of future success.
thufir (@gdreid13.bsky.social)
axios wrote a thing recently about how they (axios) is so obsessed with AI partially because "wealthy CEOs are spending billions on it" and I deeply hope that "AI" crashes and burns as it should and the people at axios learn decisively that people who have tons of money can indeed be stupid f'ks

thufir (@gdreid13.bsky.social) reply parent
this isn't just spiteful. there are so many things the US doesn't do that other countries do - things that are very beneficial to the citizens of those countries - and because the US is so rich and powerful I'm sure the temptation is there to emulate the US model and screw their underclass
thufir (@gdreid13.bsky.social)
I have to say, I get major schadenfreude watching the US shoot itself in the foot in ways like these. I don't want it to dominate the world. I don't want governments to imitate it, or people to admire it. I want it to decline and fall, and for everyone to look at it as a cautionary tale forever

I always used to pride myself on how stable I was even though I was very introverted and didn't leave the house often or hang out with people much, but lately I've been feeling the lie there. Having a partner mattered, psychologically. And knowing now I couldn't rely on her doesn't matter, somehow.

I cannot possibly imagine this operation and hospital stay costing me less than several thousand dollars if I were still in the US, so on balance it's better this all happened here. But I had friends in the US, people who would visit in a similar sitch. I don't have that here. And I miss it now.
thufir (@gdreid13.bsky.social)
I haven't been single for long, but I can confidently say the worst part of it so far is not having anyone to come visit me in the hospital when I'm here for an extended stay. I don't have any good friends in Munich, or a real support network. It's just me. And I'm lonely and sad in this hospital.

I'm convinced this phenomenon, where they have no idea what's going on 2 or more tiers below them, is what is driving "AI" adoption to the extent that it is and why they think "AI" can do so much. how can you know it can't do those jobs if you don't know what people do in those jobs?
