Childbearing is physically dangerous & painful for women; childrearing is an exhausting, degraded, isolating, and impoverishing endeavor that annihilates women’s other opportunities & goals. When women are free, they choose fewer children. There is no way to make them have more that is not violent.

William Maxwell, superintendant of NY public schools in 1913 being a BOSS.

article written in 1913 by William H. Maxwell, superintendent of schools in New York City. In an angry and defiant reaction to unfair criticism and to pressure groups, Maxwell first attacked the the age, as inefficient, as lacking in public spirit. And why? Because the public schools are not training artisans— are not doing the work that had been done by employers of labor for thousands of years. The arrogance of the manufacturers was two-fold — first, in condemning the schools for not doing what thinking men had never before considered it the duty of the schools to do and what the traditions of thousands of years laid it upon the manufacturers to do; and, second, in demanding that the State, after taxing consumers for fifty years, through a protective tariff, in order to fill the pockets of manu-facturers, should then proceed to pay the bills for training their workmen. To condemn a great industry — schoolteaching — for not doing what hitherto it had never been expected to do, and to clamor not only for protection from competition but for relief at the hands of the state from the duty and expense of training artisans —could arrogance farther go? 36

Next week, we will consider the complications of narrating/periodizing artists' lives and work, beginning Charles Hatfield's Hand of Fire (2012) and Tom Scioli's graphic biographies of Kirby and Lee. #comicsteaching For reference, our full syllabus is available here: www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/7sdox...

Finally, we looked at some comics studies terms, starting with page compositions, using Martha Kuhlman's "Design in Comics" (2020), which brings together Will Eisner, @scottmccloud.bsky.social, and @bpeeters.bsky.social--we will return to these formal approaches next week. #comicsteaching

Adding some context for the studio system, we read from @fredvanlente.bsky.social and @ryandunlavey.com's Comic Book History of Comics, also watching a clip from the 2023 Stan Lee documentary (dir. David Gelb). #comicsteaching

Working on how to describe comics pages and art, in the back part of the week were Captain America Comics #1 and #3 (1941), where Kirby and Lee begin to fully overlap. We juxtaposed the content and context of these pre-War comics with Lee's 1947 recounting in Secrets of the Comics. #comicsteaching

Marvel Tales Annual #1 (1964) reprints chunks of comics from the previous couple of years (with a loose use of "exactly"), both pointing backward to the growing Marvel catalog and forward to how to keep up with Marvel characters. It also documents the Marvel Bullpen of the moment. #comicsteaching

I gave a talk this summer on the use of superhero symbolism by insurrectionists on January 6. Between the time I propose the talk and gave it, they had been pardoned and Babbit’s family got $5M. In case anyone has forgotten the details, or would like confirmation that the insurrection was a success:

It’s not that the sequel trilogy has a deeply ambitious politics, but it did really nail the “cosplaying the fascism of the past as the fascism of the present” bit. At least Rian Johnson understood the assignment:

Civility discourse is a war on thinking and writing clearly. None of this is in defense of nuance. What civility pundits want is to be absolved of responsibility for the content of what they say, provided it's expressed in a particular way. Their fight is against judgement itself.

I will never understand how American elites managed to convince themselves that uncivil debate — not fascism, not impunity and not widespread indifference to facts — is the defining problem of our time. www.nytimes.com/2025/08/26/o...

How We Brought Respectful Debate Back to The Harvard Crimson’s Editorial Board To us, the solution is deceptively simple. Universities should create environments where students with different views must talk to one another routinely and establish ground rules that ensure they do so without distractions or prejudgment. Illiberalism on college campuses isn’t inevitable. At The Crimson, it took only a few months to radically improve.
