I was about to blow all my money away gambling instead of paying for food, mortgage, my kids' college, but then I saw a commercial that said I could get addicted to gambling in a really fast voice at the end! That was a close one.

Actually, we should ban gambling ads just like we did for tobacco (ban booze ads while you're at it). Ppl already know the risks of gambling. It's not a secret that you could lose your money or get addicted. Milquetoast-ass task force #42069 www.njspotlightnews.org/2025/04/curb...

Assemblywoman Claire Swift (R-Atlantic) said that New Jersey has become a “national hub” for online and in-person gaming and with that growth comes a responsibility to protect “our most vulnerable populations,” particularly young people. “I agree with the Task Force that gambling advertisements should include clear, visible warnings about the risks of addiction, similar to how we treat alcohol or tobacco messaging. Transparency is not censorship — it’s about giving consumers the full picture,” Swift said via email. However, Swift said that any effort to regulate advertising must be balanced against First Amendment protections. “I don’t support broad bans or government overreach, but I do believe the gaming industry has a duty to promote their products responsibly. Requiring varied, truthful warnings that educate the public on the potential risks is a reasonable step and one I would support if done thoughtfully,” Swift said. Swift is the primary sponsor of a bill in the Assembly that would change underage gambling from a disorderly persons offense to a civil penalty. The bill has not been voted on in either house.

The silver lining is that maybe states can now instead focus on utility-scale solar, which is better bang for buck than subsidizing rooftop solar. Yeah yeah "why not both" but I'm talking 2nd-best policy here.

Every frigging year I have to deal with this crap. No pediatrician near me offers the COVID vax. Pharmacists can't do it. This year, my local health dept is no longer giving the COVID vax to kids under 3. They tell me the state won't give them any due to low demand last year.

The next time a casino fails, state-alize it. Setup a state-owned gambling enterprise that can offer better odds bcs it doesn't need as high a profit margin. Borrow from the Singapore model: steep entry fees for NJ residents, don't lend to gamblers unless they pony up a lot of their own money.

Unless the person here lost everything on micro-betting, specifically, instead of just gambling in general, this is an argument for curbing all of online gambling. At this point you prob can't ban it, but casinos/bookies should be public enterprises. www.njspotlightnews.org/2025/09/new-...

In New Jersey, Hutchison noted that he is seeing the dangers of problem gambling through his work as a bankruptcy attorney, including in a recent case where a client chose to gamble rather than pay his mortgage. “It’s scary that our pursuit of revenue matters more than the health and well-being of the people we’re supposed to be governing and helping,” said Hutchison. “We have to draw a line in the sand and say, ‘This is not acceptable.’”

From the NJ Monitor newsletter today. Not entirely true. Before Jan 20, NY's Gov Hochul felt no qualms over sending the Nat Guard into the subways to combat crime despite falling rates.

National Guard: Via Jonathan Shorman at Stateline, governors nationwide are split on whether to deploy their National Guards to cities President Trump says need the military to bring down crime rates. You may be shocked to hear this, but GOP governors are open to sending their National Guards to places Trump has targeted, but Dem governors are not. A federal judge in California this week ruled that Trump’s deployment of troops to Los Angeles violated the law.

Former state Sen. Ed Durr is a Republican who briefly campaigned for the GOP nomination for governor before dropping out of the race in March. When Durr ended his gubernatorial campaign, he said he did so to boost Spadea’s chances. Now, he said he wants to see Spadea work to elect Ciattarelli. Durr joked that Spadea may have his eye on running for governor again in four years, and to do that, “he needs to get Jack out of the way.” “He’s actually actively participating and campaigning against him, and I think that’s shameful,” Durr said.

Let’s be clear about something: You’re not “digging in” if you’re providing aid and comfort to Mikie Sherrill, Phil Murphy, and the other far-Left politicians who are directly responsible for New Jersey’s skyrocketing electric bills, Sanctuary Statehood-fueled crime, and worst-in-the-country tax burdens. You’re copping out. Bill was my friend for many years, folks, but it seems he’s revealing his true colors in Election 2025. Perhaps his behavior back in 2021 should’ve been a clue; I’m always willing to assume one mistake or childish act doesn’t necessarily define someone’s character. In this case, Bill’s behavior is outrageously inexcusible and will be very hard to come back from… on air or in future cycles. This election is too damn important. More important than bruised egos and ancient beefs.

My endorsement in the November election Many of you are asking my thoughts on the fall election, so let me clear up any confusion. As far as this coming November, Jack Ciatterelli has already said in interviews that as best he can tell, Spadea's followers are all in. If that’s true, then he doesn’t need my endorsement. Frankly, I won't pretend I support a candidate I’ve always believed — and still believe — is wrong for New Jersey. New Jersey deserves a fighter and a leader, not a placeholder. I won’t rubber-stamp more of the same and I certainly won’t help sell voters on a candidate I believe will keep us stuck exactly where we are. My focus will remain on standing up for the people of this state — not propping up the political machine. I’ll continue fighting for local candidates, businesses, families and community leaders who are doing the real work to save this state. Walmart announced 481 layoffs at its Hoboken, New Jersey, corporate office, and Rite Aid drugstores laid off 1,122 amid Chapter 11 bankruptcy affected by opioid crisis lawsuits that also hit Walmart and other pharmacy chains. "On Route 55, drivers either speed or drive the speed limit. There's no in-between." IIRC the limit 55 on some stretches like near the Deptford exit. Also, Rt 55 has a huge median. Also also, "just 2 lanes" seems to imply that they want it widened. I have bad news for them.

Why we hate it: This one’s for Gloucester County folks, who bond over their loathing of this two-lane highway. Route 55 is very much a roadway of extremes: Drivers either cruise at 55 mph or blaze at 95 mph; there is no in-between. And there’s no center median, meaning tons of accidents into the woods. If you’re heading north to get to Deptford Mall during Christmas time, you’re screwed. Traffic backs up on the shoulder for a mile. And if you’re using 55 to get to the Shore (true locals know this is the way), it just abruptly ends randomly, a highway to nowhere.

This analysis was done w/ 2015-16 data, so yeah, NJ prob got more progressive than TX since then. We've also rolled out more universal pre-K & ANCHOR, which includes renters. I'd bet we're still not as progressive as Alaska, Minnesota, or California.

Reference-based pricing sounds like a good idea & should be pursued by a competent state legislature, bcs it looks like providers currently aren't required to accept payments tied to Medicare's compensation level.

I don't want Sherill to freeze rent, but by this logic wouldn't a rent freeze be more urgent? NYC, for instance, considers it a "housing emergency" when vacancy rates dip below 5%, where it's been for years now. newjerseymonitor.com/2025/08/20/n...

Similarly, in South NJ & perhaps elsewhere it's common to see guys w/ big pickup trucks flying 1 or more big American flags. (I actually saw this less or not at all in actual southern states.) If you have a truck, do that, but with at least 2 Mexican flags.

The Trump admin cites the fake news bad politicized jobs report that just came out to justify their mass deportations. But that's a misuse of that data. When you look at the official unemployment rates for native & foreign-born workers, both are up.

You might ask, “Why is this so complicated? Isn’t there an easier way to tell how U.S.-born workers are doing?” In fact, there is! The BLS reports the unemployment rate for native-born workers and guess what: It's going up. You would expect the opposite if American citizens were suddenly swimming in new opportunities thanks to Trump’s ICE raids. Ultimately, this fight is about a lot more than a gotcha over data. It actually strikes at the core of what immigration restrictionists believe. Groups like the Center for Immigration Studies have argued that, with lower immigration levels, many more Americans, and particularly men, would enter the labor force. Republicans spent the last several years claiming that a crush of migrants from Central America, Venezuela and the Caribbean were stealing work from U.S. citizens, and that Trump’s efforts to shut the border had led to soaring hiring for natives. There’s no evidence backing up this story. It’s a conservative fairy tale.

Property taxes apply a single rate to all w/in a property class, regardless of income or ability to pay. In that sense, they're regressive. They also get passed on in part to renters, who skew lower income.

Unfortunately, after considering taxes, transfers, & gov't spending, NJ is just about as regressive as Texas. The 1 big edge NJ has over TX, however, is free, public, universal-ish (almost) pre-K.

The difference b/w the avg low-tax state & Oregon, the highest-tax state in that analysis, is $8,160 or $680 per month. Not insignificant. But how much of that gets eaten up by other taxes in those regressive states?

It only looks at state income taxes. States that rely less on income taxes tend to have higher sales or property taxes. It ignores transfers & gov't spending. I care more about my income after receiving benefits from the gov't. bsky.app/profile/glas...

So far The Argument argues strongly for multiracial social democracy.

Again, I don’t want to downplay how difficult the politics of immigration are. No country has really cracked the code on how to manage high levels of it without some sort of public backlash. Even Canada, which has long prided itself on its multiculturalism, has seen anti-immigrant sentiment escalate in part because of the country’s housing crisis. In the U.S., being seen as lax on the border has cost Democrats dearly with working-class voters who’ve become the party’s Achilles’ heel. But the fact that it is hard does not take away from one fundamental point: There is no real plan for American economic stability or for a generous welfare state without more immigration. Full stop. Period. Fixing that will require standing up for openness to immigration as a basic American value while assuring voters that immigration doesn't come hand in hand with chaos. We will write many more pieces about how to do this, but liberals have to own the fact that immigration is a core of America's economic potential and that the populist economic argument against more immigration is a sham.

So getting people used to talking about the Amtrak-adjusted metric instead of the "raw" metric is good. Same reason NJT commuter rail isn't actually the "worst in the nation" like NJ dot com reported for years. They used a bad metric to determine that.

I care about making comparisons fairer like this bcs, let's say in the future NJT gets its shit together, but still delays/cancels more often than MN & LIRR. It would be very easy for an austerity ghoul to declare NJT hopeless. "Look! We gave NJT all the support & they still FAIL! Gut 'em!"

Right. I'm not saying Amtrak causes most of NJT's NEC delays/cancels. I'm saying their response about the real-time feed is correct. We should compare it's Amtrak-adjusted delays/cancels to Metro-North & LIRR. & again, I don't like their mealy-mouthed non-response about data reporting.

It depends on the reason for the delay. If it's a mechanical failure in the vehicle itself, that's on NJT. If it's due to Amtrak's infra, though, then that's not NJT's fault. So I'm fine w/ an adjustment that actually filters out the delays caused by Amtrak. Report both, of course.

Two of those railroads, Metro-North and the LIRR, post on-time rates above 96 percent almost every month. These railroads are run by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which also operates the city’s subways and buses, and is funded largely from fares and dedicated taxes. NJ Transit is different. It has been beholden to the New Jersey governor and state legislature for funding, Amtrak for much of its key infrastructure, and the federal government for major infrastructure upgrades. It has run less reliably in extreme weather, especially heat, partly because of shortcomings with Amtrak infrastructure. The agency publishes high-level performance metrics on a data dashboard, reporting the total number of trains delayed by more than six minutes and total number of cancellations per month. But to the weary office worker trying to get home to her family, there is a world of difference between a seven- and 70-minute delay, a difference the agency’s public reporting obscures. Metro-North and the LIRR, by contrast, publish information about every delayed and canceled train, including duration and cause, going back to 2012.
