I'm sure other people have long since fought this battle, and hopefully won, but that was my first hard encounter with Copilot and it is utter shit. If Microsoft is going to count me among Copilot users just because 365 comes with it that is a bald faced lie to investors.

Who steps up to the plate? And can you even be counterculture if you're centering white voices? You can if you embrace queer culture, and I kind of hope that's what we're getting. Frankly, I would hope that Vertigo stops being Anglophilic too, but even though I have faith, I don't have THAT much.

If Milestone was hip hop, then Vertigo was new wave with a little splash of punk. One voice was silenced, the other became the industry mainstream. You can't fight The Man when you've become him and have been handed the keys to the industry.

It turns out that the VC’s OTHER surrogate also experienced a placental complication that caused significant blood loss & nearly killed her. Placental issues arise from the genetics of the biological parents - not the surrogate - but their family medical histories weren’t shared with the surrogates.

“SIX MONTHS AFTER Leon’s death, Bi’s daughter was born. In an Instagram announcement, Bi sits in a hospital recliner wearing a medical gown, clutching a newborn to her chest. Bi often compared her two surrogacy experiences—“I had the world’s worst GC, and the best”—and told me for months that everything with Chelsea Sanabria had been easy and smooth. Not quite. Sanabria told me she had a great relationship with Bi but a pregnancy plagued with placental issues: first, gestational diabetes; then placenta previa, where the placenta blocks the cervix, which led to a hospitalization and a scheduled C-section. When doctors removed the baby, they found that the placenta had grown too deeply into her uterine wall, a condition known as placenta accreta. Once they removed the placenta, Sanabria began losing blood. As a nursing student and patient care technician, she knew what was going on as they called out numbers of blood loss—ultimately an astounding 5.4 liters. “The weirdest part was being awake” while she was dying, she said. An emergency hysterectomy saved her life. She woke up nine hours later, intubated, in the ICU. A 2024 survey found that naturally conceived pregnancies carry about a 2 percent risk of several adverse maternal events. A surrogate pregnancy increases that to almost 8 percent. Nobody had talked to Sanabria about these risks. Now, she posts online to educate other surrogates. As Bi pointed out repeatedly in her quest to get Leon’s placental slides, the placenta comes from the DNA of the biological parents—hers and Valdeiglesias’. In fact, Bi’s mother and sister developed diabetes while pregnant, an issue stemming from the placenta, and remained diabetic. Valdeiglesias told me that his aunt had her water break early, but everything was fine. But Bi and Valdeiglesias’s family medical histories were not disclosed to their surrogates. This is normal. If Bi and Valdeiglesias have a third child, they almost certainly won’t disclose their pregnancy complicati…

Her husband blames the hospital and not the surrogate but “stays out” of the legal stuff because “the litigation is her grieving process.” The litigation is not a grieving process - it’s rich people trying to ruin the life of a woman who nearly died trying to help them have a baby.

“Bi’s husband focused on stabilizing the family, a move he credits with saving their marriage. He blamed the hospital, not Smith, but told me that the litigation is “her grieving process.” He tried to stay out of the legal stuff so that Bi couldn’t blame him too”

Why is this article - written as a result of the VC sending a journalist confidential information - trying to explain her actions. She didn’t “piece[] together her version of events.” She just decided with no basis that the surrogate had “lots of unsafe sex” & intentionally tried to give birth early

“IN HER GRIEF, Bi pieced together her version of events: During the pregnancy, Smith had engaged in “lots of unsafe sex.” A bout of “forceful sex” led to her leaking in mid-December. More sex eventually necessitated her hospitalization. Smith had let her “adult-sized” son sleep in her bed, where he’d probably kicked her in the stomach. Smith may have even intentionally given birth early, mistakenly believing she’d receive full compensation.”

After the surrogate nearly died from the placental abruption that resulted in a miscarriage, the VC *consulted psychics* who blamed the surrogate and claimed that she must have been having rough sex or secretly hated the baby.

“She also hired psychics to give her answers. As she tells it, they all blamed Smith. One suggested that an ex-boyfriend of Smith’s had turned her against Baby Leon. Another claimed to see traumas on Smith’s belly and said she was clearly having rough sex. He warned: “She has something to hide.” When Smith refused to release her medical records unless nonpregnancy information was redacted, Bi saw it as confirmation that Smith was hiding crucial details”

The unemployment rate for Black college graduates 25 years and older reached 5.3% in July, according to seasonally adjusted figures from Haver Analytics, based on Labor Department data. That was up from 3.9% in May and 2.7% in February. (Unlike the figures for overall unemployment, the Labor Department doesn’t adjust these figures for the typical seasonal swings that occur from month to month.) The July rate was 1.7 percentage points higher than the unemployment rate for white workers with only a high-school diploma—the biggest gap since Labor Department records for this metric began 1992.

Genuinely so funny that Glinner is going to give himself a stroke and die because he can't stop obsessing about the genitals of strangers because one time someone criticised a single episode of his hugely popular sitcom.

There are more women academics—then and now—who go through this than I realized at the start of my career. Most don’t talk about it openly because they’re ashamed they weren’t able to beat the system, even though it was rigged against them.

Some of the brightest lights I’ve known have been forced to eat shit repeatedly in their careers. And they were the “lucky” ones—in that they were able to stay in the game. Many more just got completely pushed out and we never know about them except as faceless statistics.

“In the late 1960s, Dr. Rossiter was working on her Ph.D. at Yale, when a comment from one of her male professors puzzled her. Who, she had asked, were the women in science? There were none, he said. Another professor mumbled something about Marie Curie being the exception.”🙃

When I play survival games, I don't want a massive procedurally generated open world. I want a world that's a fraction of that size, with dense, interesting interactions, subsystems, and nuggets of tantalizing lore and discovery. I want every dozen steps to potentially encounter new surprises.

I've been gradually working on finding a way of condensing the complex data about open world games into a kind of metal score akin to academic journal indices. Basically it'd be a ratio representing "interactive density" and allow two games to be compared based on how empty/repetitive they are.
