The beheading of Holofernes is recounted in the deuterocanonical Book of Judith. In the story, Judith, a Jewish widow, enters the tent of Assyrian general Holofernes under the guise of seduction, as he was preparing to destroy Judith's home, the city of Bethulia. He passed out drunk, lost his head.

As it happens, Anguissola was a woman, and her sister, in addition to being a painter herself, was actually a nun. What would make someone actually want to be a nun, though, that is a good question.

Thank you. It's remarkable how angry some people get when they don't understand a piece of art. Not getting it is one thing. And I am not convinced art needs to be understood. If it stirs an emotion, it's done its job. Even if the emotion is hostile, I suppose!
