Let me add group chats
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
I’d really like the appview code to be open source so I can create my own chat service. I can do it from scratch I guess…
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
They could still open source it if it’s centralized!
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
Neither do I, but that’s one way that someone could believe both the statements in your post
Grace (@gracekind.net)
Is the Bluesky chat code open source?
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
`app.bsky.feed.post`
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
It can be reconciled if you believe that the average person is stupid

Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
For group chats, you can host a hacky one this way. I don’t think it will be supported natively for a while, unfortunately. bsky.app/profile/grac...
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
That’s funny, that blocking change is why I left twitter! You could do it with a custom appview but it would take a lot of work.

But what about second-order opportunity cost?

Human error correction stays winning (?)
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
I’m also curious how this is working since I thought relays weren’t archival anymore
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
Heads up it looks like this only on the bluesky pbc relay, and isn’t guaranteed to work with other relays! github.com/snarfed/arro...
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
Since images are served from a CDN this wouldn’t affect client performance, and it could live behind a setting so storage use isn’t affected for most people. Thoughts @samuel.bsky.team?
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
Another solution to (1) is to allow users to upload large files directly. Now that blob size limits are raised this seems like more of a possibility. Related github.com/bluesky-soci...
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
And I haven’t seen any plans to integrate them in things like device screenshots, or if that would even work in concept.
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
The more I work with content credentials, the less optimistic I get about them. They really need integration at every single step- if a single transform happens without them the whole thing falls apart.
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
There’s an open issue for (2) In the CDN library Bluesky uses. (1) is trickier- as far as I can tell, it would require the client to sign the transform with self-signed credentials, which aren’t trusted by default.
Grace (@gracekind.net)
I looked into this a little more yesterday. Content credentials are lost in two places: 1. When images are compressed by the client before upload 2. When images are served from a CDN
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
“you should still nice to them” :/
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
Oh wow, I didn’t see the repeated “them” at all… I wonder how many people did?

Tbc hosting sites from a PDS is a little different from hosting sites from a knot. I'm focusing tangled-pages on the latter, there might be projects to do the former too? They're definitely both possible and could be done from the same server
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
Although, I should check with @tangled.sh to make sure the knot events API is stable before recommending people use it!
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
You can use events emitted from the knot to do builds. (You can see in the source I’m currently using them to clear the cache on commits)
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
Yeah that was my long-term vision too! You could add a dashboard for people to log in and manage their own sites.

This was created with nano-banana. The windshield text is sort of a giveaway but the text on the spare tire is really good!

Attention, mechanisms!
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
Or just put the build step in a commit hook and include the assets in the repo (or a submodule)
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
If you want a build step, you could use a spindle and cloudflare pages to serve the result. This is what the tangled blog does: tangled.sh/@tangled.sh/...
Grace (@gracekind.net) reply parent
Yep! It’s just reads from HTML in the repo though, with no build step.
