Photographs from the first roll of film I shot using my late father’s old Cannon AE1 camera in the autumn of 2015. The AE1 was one of the first cameras to have both manual and automatic modes. This particular photograph, taken along the canal at Gas Street Basin in Birmingham, UK, was the first one on the roll.

A ‘bubble’ painting and collage produced in collaboration with 4 year old Zachary. Initially acrylic paints were mixed with washing up detergent and bubbles made by Zachary blowing into it using a drinking straw. The bubbles were laid onto paper and allowed to dry. The superheroes were cut from wrapping paper salvaged from Zachary’s recent birthday party and stuck on to the painting.

An installation called The Deluge, also known as Falling People, by Toin Adams located at the Custard Factory in Digbeth, Birmingham, UK. The sculpture features figures appearing to fall, and it is situated on the Zellig building at the complex which was formerly the factory where Bird’s instant custard powder was manufactured but is now used as a hub for creatives of all kinds.

I spent an afternoon doodling on one of the ‘bubble pictures’ I recently created with four year old Zachary and it somehow reminded me of those photographs you see of distant galaxies. The original painting was created by mixing acrylic paint with washing up detergent and then blowing into it with a drinking straw. The resulting bubbles were laid down on paper and allowed to dry. The doodles were done using a 0.05mm fine liner pen. I’m undecided whether to carry on doodling or leave it as it is. I’ll leave it for a few days and see how it feels about it then.

A tifo hung from the roof of the famous Holte End at Villa Park before the start of the game showing Villa’s coach, Unai Emery, and bearing the words ‘No limit to our dreams’. As well as being a statement of hope at the start of a new season the words carry a message for the Premier League whose Profit & Sustainability Regulations (PSR) stifle the ambitions of clubs like Aston Villa and Newcastle United, both of whom are having to sell players in spite of having wealthy owners with ambitions to compete at the highest level. In his programme notes and pre-match interviews Unai Emery criticised PSR for holding back clubs like Villa whilst seeming to protect the so called ‘Big Six’ clubs who have spent record amounts of money in the transfer market this summer to further strengthen their squads. PSR is definitely limiting the dreams of clubs like Villa and Newcastle. During the game, which ended as a 0-0 draw, both sets of fans came together in protesting about the ‘corrupt’ Premier League.

A boarded up shop front in West Bromwich, sadly typical of many in town centres up and down the UK. In a forlorn attempt to make the premises look a little less derelict the local authority have covered part of it with an image of what appears to be a gift shop featuring three celebrities born in the area. Actress Julie Walters (famous for her leading role in the film Educating Rita) stands in the doorway whilst comedian Frank Skinner is behind the counter. Sitting on a chair at the front of the shop is ‘Rock God’ and former Led Zeppelin front man, Robert Plant.

Iron:Man is a statue by Antony Gormley, in Victoria Square, Birmingham, UK. The statue is 6 metres (20 ft) tall, including the feet which are buried beneath the pavement, and weighs 6 metric tons. The statue leans 7.5° backwards and 5° to its left. It is said by the sculptor to represent the traditional skills of Birmingham and the Black Country practised during the Industrial Revolution.

Cast at Bradley and Fosters Castings (now Firth Rixson Castings) in Willenhall, it was erected in 1993 and was a gift to the City from the Trustee Savings Bank, being erected outside the former Head Post Office, which was then their headquarters. It was originally named Untitled, but gained the nickname Iron Man, which Gormley requested be changed to Iron:Man and which became the official name for it.

Black Sabbath play their last ever gig today (5/7/25) at Villa Park, Birmingham, UK. A spectacular piece of street art commemorating the Brummie heroes has recently been completed in the city centre attracting thousands of fans keen to have their photographs taken alongside it.

The 120ft mural, painted by artist Mr Murals, depicts all four original band members: Geezer Butler, Ozzy Osbourne, Bill Ward, and Tony Iommi.

The mural has attracted thousands of visitors since its completion by local graffiti artist, Mr Murals. Fans from all over the world have flooded into Birmingham for the concert that will also feature a host of other Heavy Metal bands including Metallica, Guns N’ Roses and Slayer.
