Some interesting stats there for Higher Education folk. For me the 36% of the 15000 students surveyed who avoid going to the campus to save on travel costs is interesting, and not something I've heard before. Even after student discounts they're obviously still struggling with the cost of living.

Excited to get my lovely @ifixit.com replacement laptop battery and toolkit today. Went to change it this evening and once I finally managed to prise the Dell Inspiron case apart I discovered my "7000" uses a different battery type. Oh well, I get to try out their returns dept as well I guess.

My boss has fully bought into the AI hype, presented a Board paper detailing hundreds of employees we can get rid of. There's no AI that can do what he has told them so as the head of IT charged with delivering it, I'm fucking off to a better paid job before it goes tits up here.

ISTR some the modern airship manufacturers mentioning wind turbine blade deliveries (along side oil/gas production platform gear!) as they had the advantage of not needing a run way to take off/land on.

The Stratford-upon-Avon canal has had a closed section of the towpath for some years now. To the point that there is a clear "desire line" dipping down towards the water round the side of the heras fencing at one end. The towpath is properly wet half way along though (allegedly. ๐ )

See if you have a #RepairCafe somewhere nearby. Many of those have folks who can sew and mend clothes, and will be happy to show you how to do it. If you need a replacement zipper you'll probably need to buy it first, or maybe take it to a repair cafe for advice first so you get the right sort.

Thatcher sold off auxiliary functions of BR (Sealink, BR Hotels, Travellers Fare, etc) in 1980s that had already been split back in 1970s, but it was John Major presiding over the privatisation of the core rail part of BR from 1991-93. ISTR Thatcher even called it "a privatisation too far".

I don't know why but today was "edging shears" day in my sharpening zone at the local #RepairCafe. Had plenty of other things too, but I must have done 10 or 12 of these awkward tools, including one bag alone with three in. Still, there'll be some sharp lawn edges around the town now!

Had an interesting talk at this evening's @suaclimate.bsky.social meeting by Ben from @climate-risk.bsky.social . We're usually looking at very local issues so it was good to think about larger scale risks, especially those where the effects of #ClimateChange might stuff up our plans to tackle it.

Interesting paper, and one I shall salt away to refer people to when we have composting discussions in the future. I don't know if it was related to this, but long ago I took part in a similar study (via Garden Organic IIRC) and my sample-size-of-one results were similar, even after years for some.

As for late frosts affecting harvests, that something we do get every few years, and there's not really much you can do about it outside of protected growing spaces (greenhouses, polytunnels, etc).

Having said that, for dealing with pests I tend to veer towards "mechanical intervention" (picking stuff off!) and supporting eco-systems of predators. The problem comes when a new pest arrives thanks to climate change/global trade/etc and we've no natural predators. We've seen this repeatedly here.

I'm not a commercial grower, so I don't have an livelihood on the line if the apples or hazelnut crops are bad. Having said that, we have had an increasing issue with ermine moth on the apples, which the trees seem to shrug off for now, but I don't know if we'll see long term ill effects.

My road in Stratford-upon-Avon is in an odd situation that there is a basic bus shelter, but the one way bus route stops on the opposite side of the road! Been like this for many years - I've seen people shelter there from the rain and then scramble across the road when the bus comes.
