I think about the line “Silence means security, silence means approval” a lot. Like, A LOT.

#REMtop30 This was hard, but my list is done. 30. Begin the Begin “The insurgency began and we missed it.’ This should be higher ranked but it’s a good name to start with. REM rock. They have always rocked. This is an REM rock song. It’s got feedback and everything! youtu.be/aUQ6QVlC2Uw?...

Dude, the inability to exercise and passing out when I tried to *is* the data here.
Steve Bullock (@guitarmoog.bsky.social)
This one goes out to the cardiologist who balled at me to go faster on the exercise bike, told me I could when I said I couldn’t, then after I’d woken from passing out told me I didn’t give him enough data to diagnose anything so there was nothing he could do.

Cool (well, not that everything hurts), but please don’t feel bad or not get one if you do need to. I’ve done it, and even though it turned out I wasn’t dying, I’m still v glad I did.

Good teachers are the best thing. I had a philosophy teacher who would give us pages of comments on essays but refused to grade them as he didn’t believe thoughts could or should be assigned grades.

[BTW I don’t mean to cast shade on those who do need social media exposure to make a living. Not at all. Just arguing that this brings a certain perspective with it that other users may not have.]
Steve Bullock (@guitarmoog.bsky.social) reply parent
So, yes, the sustainability of it as an ongoing concern is important to us civilians, but more users is not a particular concern or desire in itself beyond that consideration. Whereas not having my days’ scrolling spoiled by the interjections of racists, fascists and cunts really is valuable.
Steve Bullock (@guitarmoog.bsky.social)
FWIW I think most of the criticism on Bluesky of Bluesky is from the point of view of those that need social media for their profession, campaigns, or exposure. I think most civilian users see it as a place to hang out, express themselves & thoughts, chat shit, see interesting or fun stuff etc.

It seems relevant to ask why it is said to be important to leave the ECHR. I can get to ‘so we can abuse the rights of asylum seekers’; or ‘so we can abuse the rights of immigrants’; or ‘so we can abuse everybody’s rights’. Not the most attractive proposition.

I wouldn’t have thought many Labour MPs came into politics to strip the rights of torture survivors to be reunited with the spouses & children. They need to take a long hard look in the mirror & ask whether Starmer, Cooper & Reeves are really the leadership their careers should be remembered with.

“The English are like the hens and the wolves that can use the keys for the henhouse with the paws” Jean-Jacques might have said of them now.
Steve Bullock (@guitarmoog.bsky.social) reply parent
Rousseau was bonkers, but he had a point about the English here: “The people of England regards itself as free; but it is grossly mistaken; it is free only during the election of members of parliament. As soon as they are elected, slavery overtakes it, and it is nothing.”
Steve Bullock (@guitarmoog.bsky.social) reply parent

Steve Bullock (@guitarmoog.bsky.social)
The English willingness and even enthusiasm to actively divest themselves of the rights that protect them is just baffling. People seem to think they’re fighting some battle against foreign oppressors when the rights they wish to abandon protect* them from being oppressed by their own government.
