Assistant professor of political science. I think about identity, stigma, race, and politics more than any normal person should. Lover of life. Pro-democracy. People should dance more. Not Hakeem Jeffries, the Minority Leader.

One thing this moment makes clear is how easy it is for some to justify insanely horrible acts. “They’re illegal.” “We need law & order.” “The president can do what he wants.” “They’re the children of Hamas.” Scary thing: those willing to tolerate these bad acts don’t seem to have a red line.

Trump’s is an authoritarian project, to be sure. But it is also very much a project motivated by a politics of white grievance, white resentment, and white identity. And this govt will use its power to assert white dominance anyway it can—from brutalizing immigrants to restoring Lee’s portrait.

Some good news. ActBlue just announced major updates to crack down on deceptive fundraising. New rules ban impersonation, fake matches, and excessive spam. Big step in the right direction. Shout out to Josh Nelson and everyone who has been advocating for these changes.

We're writing to inform you of updates to our Account Use Policy that take effect on August 20th. These changes reflect our shared commitment to building a sustainable, high-trust fundraising ecosystem that serves the long-term interests of Democratic and progressive causes. Why These Updates Matter The digital fundraising landscape has evolved dramatically, and with it, we've seen practices emerge that undermine donor trust and hurt all of us. When donors encounter misleading solicitations, impersonation, or excessive spam, they lose confidence—not just in bad actors, but in our entire movement. These policy updates are designed to protect the ecosystem we've all worked hard to build. By establishing clear standards for responsible fundraising, we're helping ensure that: Donors feel confident their contributions are being used effectively Legitimate organizations can build sustainable, long-term fundraising programs Bad actors can't undermine the trust you've earned with your supporters Key Changes That May Impact Your Operations: 1. Solicitation Standards We have strengthened our policies around impersonation, barring outside groups from using the name or likeness of any candidate, elected official, or organization in a way that falsely implies endorsement, affiliation, or authorization without documented written permission. Entities must not misleadingly suggest that donations will directly benefit specific individuals or entities without proper authorization, or misrepresent the destination or intended use of donor funds. We're also explicitly prohibiting false claims in solicitations, including references to fake voting records, non-existent memberships, or unverified matching programs. These changes ensure donors are making informed choices about their giving. 2. Responsible Stewardship & Transparency To help ensure donor contributions are being used effectively and as promised, we've introduced new provisions that allow us to request documentation when needed. These aren't blanket requirements - they're tools we can use to verify that funds are being stewarded responsibly and that fundraising claims are accurate in response to donor complaints. Impact documentation: We may request statements showing how contributions have been used to advance your stated mission Matching program verification: If you advertise matching programs, you must be able to provide documentation verifying your matching program upon request 3. Donor Relations We've all seen how excessive solicitations and aggressive fundraising tactics can drive donors away from our movement. When supporters feel bombarded or misled, they don't just unsubscribe from one organization—they often stop giving altogether. That's why we're establishing clearer standards for respectful donor engagement. If an entity becomes the subject of repeated donor complaints about excessive or aggressive solicitations, we'll investigate and work with them on corrective action. This isn't about policing every email, it's about addressing patterns of behavior that damage donor relationships across our ecosystem. All entities using our platform are expected to maintain respectful and transparent fundraising practices. By holding each other to these standards, we protect the donor relationships that sustain our collective work.

A hard day for those who care about justice. Sharing these words from Rev. William Barber II, who’s long been a moral voice for the poor. “The passage of this bill is deadly, but it is not a defeat. We must meet it with a resurrection.”

Screenshot of a statement from Rev. William Barber condemning GOP budget bill. He calls it “one of the most morally-bankrupt pieces of legislation in our nation’s history,” citing deep cuts to healthcare, food assistance, and immigrant support, while benefiting the wealthy. He describes the bill as “policy murder in plain sight” and criticizes lawmakers who invoke religion while supporting harmful policies. He ends with a call to organize, vote out those responsible, and “build a movement together that can reconstruct our democracy.”

LISTEN. State, private, selective, a little less selective, all of them are suspect and can’t be trusted to protect their most marginalized students.

Just one more reminder that universities are not brave places. And if you’re part of a marginalized group, don’t count on your interests being protected when it really matters. www.nytimes.com/2025/07/01/u...

Read this @nytimes.com piece by @jacobhacker.bsky.social and @patrick-sullivan.bsky.social that lays out just how bad the GOP budget bill is—especially for working-class and poor folks. “Are they the party of working people or of the rich and powerful? Legislation speaks louder than words.”

It’s Pride wknd in SF & while I’m being a lazy gay—writing at home—I figured I’d share a little thing I teach using P.R.I.D.E. I tell students that much of what we do reflects desire for Power, Regard, Influence, Dignity & Esteem. The PRIDE-approach is key to how we think abt identity at Stanford.

SCOTUS just stripped judges' power to stop unconstitutional orders nationwide in a move KBJ calls "an existential threat to the rule of law" The Court has chosen a side, and it isn't the rule of law. Lower courts can't protect the Constitution because the Supreme Court won't let them.

This administration is pursuing a white supremacist project—attacking birthright citizenship, gutting DEI, welcoming white S. Africans under the guise of “white genocide,” and brutalizing brown folks who’ve contributed to this country for decades. We must fight this project relentlessly.

When democracy challenges their preferred status quo, too many of these folks shamelessly turn to authoritarian tactics to overturn its outcomes. The current climate only emboldens these fascist fools. Those of us who still believe in the promise of democracy must not give up the fight!

I hope Harvard’s administration heeds the strong case @ryanenos.bsky.social and @stevelevitsky.bsky.social make in this piece. To give in to the demands of an authoritarian government would risk the university’s credibility and make it complicit in the erosion of American democracy.

It is frightening that the defense of basic rights and democratic self-government against the authoritarian onslaught depends so much on people who are evidently unable and/or unwilling to grasp who and what we are facing and instead just cling to signaling “bipartisanship” and upholding “unity.”

Alt text: Graffiti-style protest messages painted in white on the windowpanes of a storefront in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. Each pane displays a satirical acronym for “ICE,” including phrases like “Illegal Country-wide Embarrassment,” “Induced Community Extinction,” “Institution of Child Endangerment,” and “Insecure Confused Ejaculation.” The window reflects street traffic, utility poles, palm trees, and a person taking the photo. A green “A” health grade is visible in the bottom right corner.

Some say it’s radical—even crazy—to demand that government do more to make people’s lives better. But what they don’t say is this: maintaining a status quo that fails so many and renders so many disposable? That’s radical too. I’m not a New Yorker, but if I were, I’d rank Mamdani first.

It's only been about 150 days since Jan. 20. And yet there's been so much devastation to so many people. It's more important than ever for Dems to actually be a party that reflects the people it seeks to represent—to be aggressively pro-democracy, anti-authoritarian, anti-corruption, anti-oligarchy.
