I wish that they would of mooned us instead of the black smoke in my lungs. I would have not had the asthma reaction. And actually, I would admire the bravery of bare-assed counter-protesters!

Their peckers remain teeny, even with all of that investment and harassment of the peaceful protesters. An undercover officer told me that the surveillance camera would catch the bullies. "If they're dusting you with black smoke or mooning you, we'll give the citations"
Robb Hannawacker (@hannawacker.bsky.social) reply parent
I had to bring a folding chair, but I got more of the black-exhaust trucks intimidations, and had asthma troubles. Counter-protesters are teeny-peckered men, with big strangely modified large pickups with tattered American flags. Their exhausts is illegally modified to pour-out black smoke.

The same butterfly as above, but from its much less brilliant underside. This species rarely rests with wings open; so not showing the colors of the upper-side. The light-blue on the edge, is not pigment, but the bending of light from nano-structures. The same for the iridescent violet above.

My work was a labor of love rather than work for any agency, institution or organization. So it was my weekends spring through fall when I did my butterfly survey. My aim was to document species diversity in this understudied area, in these sky Island ecosystems, threatened by climate change.
Robb Hannawacker (@hannawacker.bsky.social) reply parent
The area is one of the most rulal, and understudied in the lower 48 United States. Maybe it was just a little too far from academic institutions. Also with the desert and isolated mountains, island biogeography, the region has less consistent abundance of larger connected ecosystems.
Robb Hannawacker (@hannawacker.bsky.social) reply parent
After a few years working on it, I feel proud that it is complete enough. It took much hiking on four-wheel-drive roads through deserts Woodlands and forest. I can no longer hike, but I'm still getting around in my beat-up 4runner and walking short distances with a cane.
