Toho's early work was a little too New Wave for my tastes, but when Godzilla 1985 came out with Raymond Burr and Dr Pepper edited in, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically.

MESSIAH OF EVIL: the people who made this don't seem to realise what they did. It's a perfect nightmare of California gothic with astonishing production design by Jack Fisk (Eraserhead, There Will Be Blood etc) & some of the scariest setpieces in 1970s US horror. Anitra Ford's eyes are miraculous.
