Lovely to hear Celia Johnson’s niece on #bbcbh talking about #BriefEncounter Fascinating account of travelling to UK from India via Gibraltar by boat in WE2. Very similar to my mother’s evacuation from Gibraltar in 1940, although her convoy did travel up Bay of Biscay to Liverpool.
She had memories of a merchant ship in the convoy being hit, and its cargo of wood covering a wide area of the sea. My mother and her family were then settled in central London during the Blitz! They were later relocated to Ballymena in Northern Ireland for the duration of the rest of war.
