I’d never thought I would see the effects of climate change unfold in my lifetime. But it’s happening right in front of us. Climate change deniers like to call this “weather”, but farmers and insurance companies see the economic catastrophe unfold in front of them. The physics are terribly simple.
Henk Muller (@henk-muller.bsky.social) reply parent
Storm Erin grew faster than any storm in history. Pakistan has been hit by once in generation floods twice. The LA fires are recent and unprecedented. London was on fire three years ago (unprecedented). Heat over 50C (this is deadly) has doubled in prevalence www.bbc.co.uk/news/science...
Henk Muller (@henk-muller.bsky.social) reply parent
We can sequester very little. Hopefully we can sequester what is seeping in inevitably. Some good numbers in here: What is carbon capture and can it fight climate change? www.bbc.com/news/science... That’s 18 months old and zero progress has been made on pushing carbon back under ground at scale
Henk Muller (@henk-muller.bsky.social) reply parent
I think you need to do a bout of reading on “a few degree C”. We’re almost at 1.5C, and we see deadly floods, heat, tornadoes, and cyclones, destroying billions of value, with insurance companies pulling out. “A few degrees” will make melting of glaciers permanent; no fresh water for many
Henk Muller (@henk-muller.bsky.social) reply parent
Carbon capture is essential because it will slow us to burn *freshly grown* fuel; it will remove some CO2 from the atmosphere. Fossil fuel companies like to sell it as a solution to burning more coal and oil. But nobody has yet made it work at scale.
Henk Muller (@henk-muller.bsky.social) reply parent
CO2 capture is considering essential for net zero, in combination with boring fast growing plants, as that sequesters some CO2 directly from the air. If you’re looking for an excuse to burn a boat load of fossil fuels, you’re asking the wrong person.
Henk Muller (@henk-muller.bsky.social) reply parent
CO2 capture typically refers to putting a big pipe on the end of a power station and pumping the gas underground hoping it won’t escape for a few thousand years. Even that is hard, let alone direct capture of CO2 from the air, and then there’s methane escaping from coal/oil exploration
Henk Muller (@henk-muller.bsky.social) reply parent
There’s your contribution to the private eye look-alikes
Henk Muller (@henk-muller.bsky.social) reply parent
That’s up to them for sure? By that time carbon capture may have delivered. Who knows. I do know it’s unwise for my generation to exhaust our environment and leaving future generations with no choice. You got to understand that we are dealing with risks and risk mitigation.
Henk Muller (@henk-muller.bsky.social) reply parent
Whether or not you’re interested to be heard by people, you’ll have a way of living that will align with one or the other side of the argument. Burn all the coal we can find, it’ll be ok; or only burn what’s essential, because it may not be ok.
Henk Muller (@henk-muller.bsky.social) reply parent
It’ll depend on your definition of poorer. I personally don’t feel poorer, but that’s me. Question for you: what’s your message to the world?
Henk Muller (@henk-muller.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m very aware of that. The uk glass industry uses 9 TWh of power annually; largely because they encourage recycling rather than reuse. It could be slashed if they accepted re-use. The government could set policy. Shock, horror. Steel? You can make it green Plastic? Avoid single use

Henk Muller (@henk-muller.bsky.social) reply parent
You have a point. However, I’ve given up stuff yet live comfortably using very little fossil fuels. Wind and solar power when available, gas otherwise. Over time that’ll become marginal. African countries seem to move straight to solar: cheap and totally abundant.
Henk Muller (@henk-muller.bsky.social) reply parent
That’s correct. I’m not sure whether you’re trying to make a point or just trolling.

It, maintaining consumerism will drag us over all sorts of edges
Henk Muller (@henk-muller.bsky.social) reply parent
People have termed this the poly crisis; which climate change is one part of. Other crisis are: plastic, PFAS, antibiotic resistance, food insecurity, soil erosion, just to mention a few. A lot of these are driven by out of control capitalism. Encouraging consumerism makes all of them worse.
Henk Muller (@henk-muller.bsky.social) reply parent
I think they mean that unbridled consumerism is one of the reason that we’re heading for possibly catastrophic climate change. Buying tons of plastic days before Christmas that are destined for landfill the week after is both unnecessary and unhelpful

The red tape around installing a heatpump make it a challenge. One can put a noisy, polluting, gas boiler in without any paperwork beyond a gas-safe certificate. To install a heatpump for the tenants you have to go through 6 months of planning permission, and a few thousand pounds of surveys.

There’s no cost associated with nationalisation. It costs money to (1) run a water company; (2) service the insane debts that they’ve laden the com pay with; (3) pay dividends to shareholders (4) to fix unmaintained infrastructure (1) and (4) must happen. (2) is the hot potato

The only way to milk a utility to is to balloon the debt, and ignore the inevitable collapse. The government is scared of the black hole of debt that privatisation created. The companies that underwrote the debt are important to the government; we’re not. The free market strikes again

I think the link is that neither of them appreciate thought; condemning that as arty farty intellectual liberalism. Once you condemn yourself to never think, you end up harking for policies of the past, as these are a safe haven. Dig up and burn coal; hate people who are different. Hate nature.

Any or all of them may happen. But something needs to be the final drop to lift us over the edge of the tipping point. Likely it is a coal plant somewhere, but it could be somebody walking instead of driving. Don’t let fear for the future stand in the way of action today.

We can limit is impact. It’s the sum of all emissions that determines where the planet’s climate goes (and a lot of natural feedbacks). Whether it is you personally, a village, company, or country: cutting your emissions makes a difference.
