him back and yet somehow still did—pour out of him in hiccoughing, silent sobs. He tightens his grip on the fabric, the note, desperate, as if they could bring Alex to him if he pressed them hard enough against his chest. He’s not sure if the tears will ever stop. 9/9 sorry for the ouchie! 💔
steeling himself on the plane home, of telling himself he could walk back into this room and it could be like he never left. But now, with no one to see him, Henry lets himself fall apart. He lets the grief pull him under, lets the ache of Alex—the man who was never, ever supposed to love 8/9
chest as if they’re the only things anchoring him to something that was never, ever meant to happen. He doesn’t have to stop himself this time, doesn’t have to swallow down the hot, fast tears spilling over his cheeks in heaving sobs of grief and loss. Hours of 7/9
burned him, like Alex has. The empty bag flies from the bed in his next breath, thrown against the wall, useless, irrelevant in the face of the burning ache in Henry’s chest. He curls on his side by the pillows, dragging the hat and the note to him and pressing it close to his chest 6/9
That’s when he notices it. A scrap of paper folded carefully inside. His heart stutters. He unfolds it with shaking fingers. H – a reminder of our time and karaoke (and my persuasion skills) yrs A The letters swim before he’s finished reading. He drops the note into the hat like it’s 5/9
bag exactly where he shoved it when he took it off. A reminder of what he did and, more cruelly, of what he left behind. He pulls it free and the old weight of it is heavier than it should be. He falters and the hat slips through his fingers to land on the duvet with a small, soft thud. 4/9
The stillness is suffocating. He unzips his weekender bag, after telling everyone that he’ll unpack it himself. He needs the task. The diversion, something to keep his hands occupied while his chest threatens to collapse in on itself. But of course, it’s there. Nestled at the bottom of the 3/9
He tells himself it’s nothing—that it’s just a souvenir, a scrap to hold onto—but he can’t quite bring himself to say what it actually is. Henry doesn’t think about it again until he’s back in Kensington, standing alone in the quiet of his room with the city pressing dimly at his windows. 2/9
ooops need to stop seeing these so my fingers stop slipping lolz Henry sneaks the hat he wore to the bar into his bag when they return to the lake house. It feels reckless, immature even, but he shoves the thing into the bottom of his bag and hides it like contraband beneath folded shirts. 1/9
