I was driving through rural Illinois in early August & stopped at a local burger joint to grab a milkshake for the road. While I was waiting, I turned around and saw this across the street. How many of these shops are there in rural communities? It even had signs vilifying @govpritzker.illinois.gov

I don’t remember the Man with Heavy Hands, but I could just need a memory jog. There are a couple faces that come to mind from Pike Place Market and Pioneer Square, but not sure. There were so many characters. Conan and a few folks in Pike Place, Pioneer Square, & Cap Hill are most memorable to me.
Conan was everywhere. I walked everywhere around the city and so did he. I never spoke to him and don’t remember ever seeing him speaking to anyone. Everyone local was so used to him, so it was funny to see people get startled and hide in doorways. It was like seeing someone from another dimension.

Oh, no!! I had that happen in April last year, but there was no tear and my doc is still unsure why it happened. I was just standing in my garden. So many alarming eye tests and injections. That weird lacy blotchy flying phantom took 2 months to finally go away. Another friend just had a tear, too!
They’re so perfect with alternating bites of that sharp Beecher’s.
One minute you’re in your kitchen in Portland and the next you’re between two cornfields in Omgwtf, Wisconsin listening to Always See Your Face by Love blaring from your rental car while you dance it out a bit to stretch your legs before getting back on the highway. Surreal times.

One minute you’re standing in your kitchen about to make the fancy tuna salad recipe a friend sent you and the next minute you’re standing in another friend’s kitchen thousands of miles away watching him prepare you a different fancy tuna salad. Life is weird and sweet even when it’s a fuckin’ mess.

It really was a great audience! My heart soared a bit when so many folks clapped and whooped at the mere mention of Edward Everett Horton before the film started. It’s also nice to know that that enthusiasm will keep pre-Code screenings coming.
It was such a dream to see Ernst Lubitsch’s sold out “Trouble in Paradise” at Portland’s @hollywoodtheatre.org’s last night! There’s nothing as fun as the exaggerated winks, fast talk, and bouncing eyebrows of pre-Code innuendo. Plus, the sets + wardrobe were amazing to finally see on a big screen.
PDX PSA: Mis Tacones has the best Agua de Jamaica (hibiscus iced tea) in all of Portland. And their food is vegan and amazing (even to a pescatarian). Also, I love trying salsas and my favorite salsa *so far* in Portland is the Cassera salsa from Mi Burrito. They have great breakfast burritos, too.
I wonder if he knows Big Balls.
It was so wonderful to see Wong Kar-wai’s stunning film “In the Mood for Love” on a big screen again at Cinema 21. In 2001, I would dwell on the beauty of it as a balm during a very tumultuous year that brought a big Seattle earthquake, a life-changing car accident, and 9/11. Thank heavens for art.
1996, two yrs later, in Tacoma with the same friends’ kid as below. This time with her constant companion “Baby Kitty”. Now she lifts me off my feet when she hugs me! Surround your kids with loving misfits & they too could end up with glam “Benita Bizarre meets Breakfast at Tiffany’s” looks.
Me too! I’ve been to a lot of strange grottos and cave tours on road trips, but our grotto here is… next level.
That’s wild! The owner has a nice, very regal presence. Sometimes there will be a lot of her family dining and it’s nice to see her hold court. Wandering around The Grotto afterwards can really round out a strange day.
!!! I did not realize there were two locations. I’ve only eaten at the one on Sandy once, but have gone with people a few times after that and had a soda when I really just wanted to soak in the strange atmosphere again. It’s surreal. Like, V.C. Andrews decorated a Kinko’s to look like a dollhouse.

The ripple effect when a good friend of mine loses their The Late Show with Stephen Colbert job goes beyond the 200 amazing staffers. The loss of just this friend’s role will hurt many, many small businesses in a variety of ways - and that’s just one person. Diabolical and heartbreaking shit.
Man, I really miss seeing the Big Bear Valley eaglets on the FOBBV cameras so much. I hope Sunny and Gizmo are having fun soaring around wherever they are.
This frittata recipe is super versatile and easy. You can slice to store in fridge or freeze slices for later between layers of parchment paper in a freezer bag and thaw in fridge when ready. Nice in a sandwich, with salad, with toast, in burritos, in yer hand, etc. So good with fresh summer herbs!
I’d watch that. I wonder if they ever sold souvenir slide sets for tourists visiting the factory. Or, perhaps, Viewmaster reels!

A dreamy morning in the garden. The heatwave is coming, so I watered + gathered what I could for cheery bouquets. I finally had success with hollyhocks + cool Love-in-a-mist pods this year! Plus, tons of Sun Gold tomatoes, bluebs, and herbs. Excited to roast and pickle lots of veggies tomorrow AM.

I moved to Portland 17 years ago today! ♥️ I couldn’t even imagine loving it as much as I do. I got a job the day after I rolled in. Sometimes a place just gets its hooks in you real quick.
Some good ideas from my pal @shilobyrd.bsky.social from her nana who “survived the Great Depression in an uninsulated plywood shack in Montana”. I’ve always wanted to learn to tie fancy knots, so now is a good time. Thank you, Shilo!
So wild, right?! I planted all four blueberry plants ten years ago and the Chandler blueberries have always been the largest, but this year they’re total bruisers.
My four blueberry bushes are doing so great this year! The blueberries from my “Chandler” bush are enormous and the circumference of quarters and nickels! Real knife and forkers. I think I might make blueberry hand pies to have ready in the freezer to bake.

Went to Fantino on Division St. here in Portland for the first time last night. It was great and it was nice to hear so many patrons and staff having conversations in Italian. The focaccia with herb butter, burrata with stone fruit, lemony bucatini, and the NA Spritz were all lovely. It’s cute, too!
Killing Eve was so fun and had so much great music!

My view while I lounged around the park the other day when it was warmer here in Portland. Every year, I wonder how this place could even be real. Those silly gumdrop trees just do me in. Such a strange little glowing jewel box of a place.

This strawberry lemonade recipe is very simple and delightful! It’s potent, so I think it’s nice to fill your glass w/ 1/2 lemonade and 1/2 fizzy water. I made a double batch and froze half in pint jars. I’ll do the same with lavender lemonade. It’s nice to take to the park for dreamy lollygagging.

Eating lunch near & having a little casual small talk with Dustin Hoffman, Linda Lavin, and others during the weeks I’d ride into work w/ my great-grandpa to Broadhurst Theatre while in NYC to visit my family over the years. John Randolph called me “Tootsie” & “Toots”. All nice, hardworking folks!

It really is. She was such a lovely, engaging person. We were thick as thieves.
I love it when people who knew her, or even just met her briefly, tell me nice things about my grandmother. She passed away thirty-three years ago and is still getting compliments! That’s how wonderful she was. I miss her every day. They broke the mold with that one.
The cream puffs are nice, too. Be warned that they are nearly the size of a toddler.

You’d have to be a real sap to get a little misty watching them the last week or so. Good thing I’m tough as nails. That spell when they were all elbows was hilarious and stressful. It was such a relief when neither eaglet was accidentally knocked out of the nest!

Took myself to a double feature tonight. I saw the stunning, restored The Umbrellas of Cherbourg at Academy, then Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted at @hollywoodtheatre.org. Both were amazing, but Swamp Dogg pulled every heartstring AND made me laugh really hard. Go see it. Hope it gets a longer run!
I’m sorry you had the same experience, but not surprised. I still feel icky about it. Mostly because I don’t understand why anyone would enjoy feeling like that. I like uncomfortable and cringey stuff in lots of films or tv shows, but not whatever that was.
I had an intense visceral reaction when I went with CF a few weeks back. She had an extra ticket and I didn’t know anything about it. I want the time I spent watching it back. One note boring idiocy. Uuugh.
The four tiny baby bunnies are out of the flowerpot nest now and nesting on the ground in my cranesbill geranium patch. The way I found out gave me such a start. I won’t be able to water the geraniums for a while. Mom is tired, but still nearby. Also, baby bunnies are very bossy and all side-eye.
She makes the loveliest jam and syrup, too! Worth the occasional bloodshed.

My friends’ daughter just graduated from college and is doing her first road trip here from MN with her boyfriend. So excited for them. I hope they arrive this weekend with pockets full of pressed pennies and stories of balls rolling uphill.
