Why were you mad? The whole point is that the IMF figure for "subsidies" is arrived at in a ludicrous way. You can simultaneously believe that we should reduce our consumption of petroleum products without using shenanigans to massively overstate the level of subsidy.

I couldn't tell you why exactly, but ionizing radiation makes metal brittle, so as I understand it metal parts must be replaced on a schedule, or any number of failure conditions may obtain. And then there's the problem of tritium having a half-life of about twelve years.
It definitely USED to have a large arsenal of working nukes, but there's reason to think it hasn't been well-maintained since about a decade before the collapse of the USSR. And nukes are high-maintenance; if not well-maintained they very well may not work, at least as intended.
Ukraine is just systematically taking out Russia's ability to wage war. Meanwhile, Russia seems to only occasionally hit targets of logistical consequence; mostly hitting apartment buildings and shopping centers and the like. Ukraine must still be getting good intelligence from the U.S.

Talk about the devil being in the details. Who do the armies answer to? Who's making them and how? But: I don't think there are any modern merc outfits with the manpower and firepower to provide a suitable deterrent versus renewed invasion by Russia. Russia's weakened but not THAT weak.
Yes, even if details like spelling aren't -- well, aren't always, you could definitely still run into trouble misspelling something -- quite as important, language skills more broadly are probably overall more important now that natural language is the principle interface. It's really weird.

It might be that in twenty years no one gives a damn if you can spell as long as you don't spell so bad an AI can't figure out what you mean. But that it's really important to be good at assessing the relative strengths and weaknesses of systems of AI models, etc.

Yeah, and how we train software engineers is going to be really up in the air. There's still a need for human guidance on some level, I think, but AI will be leveraged to THAT end too. It's dizzying to find yourself entertaining heresies like: "Do humans really need to know how to spell?"
And I'm someone who has long been critical of the "solo developer" approach as kind of an antiquated and romantic notion (unless you're just talking about maintaining some very specific library or tool). But "solo developer" has now got new life.
I feel like we've got maybe a five year window before the corporate team programming paradigm python figures out how to swallow this meal. Until then the solo developer is going to be punching above his weight class.

Yes and my further thoughts on this are that if you are an experienced in software development and have high executive function, AI coding (e.g. with Claude, bridging to special-purpose models via OpenRouter) makes you essentially the producer/director of a cast of AIs, a one-man team. But . . .

Lots of other professionals are going to find themselves in a similar situation to one extent or another. I can't tell you how, specifically: no one can. A lot of people are throwing a lot of money at answering that question, though. My advice to any reader is, be alert to opportunity.

I think we'd probably be better off if the federal government provided (probably via block grants to states) housing of last resort. Basically, secure barracks whose public areas at least are surveilled, each with a mess, an attached clinic, and a security station.
Let's face it, these things are a basic utility now, just as much as electricity is. I don't want to nationalize it; the "last resort" should not be intended to out-compete the private offerings.
Similarly, you could create a federal IdP (identity provider) of last resort. And you could retask the USPS to be an internet provider of last resort.
Do away with the parasitic paycheck-cashing industry overnight and make disbursements easy and efficient.
Not like anybody can get a free checking account at literally every bank: but you can have one free checking account that is on file with the federal government. And that can be used to disburse tax refunds and existing government benefits.
