I was floored by this one. The only other one I've read is Inherent Vice as well. Its rewards extremely close reading (used a wiki after each chapter) and there's a dual mode of meaning behind the narrative that mimics the experience of the protagonist decoding either an incredible truth or nothing?

I have seen a couple, when I was living in my childhood home as a teenager. I would see them walking up and down the staircase. I believe it was like three or four times over a couple years. Very striking and far darker than a normal shadow.
My mother was in a car accident as a teenager caused by all of the passengers seeing an impossibly dark shadow person/hatman in the middle of a country road in the middle of the afternoon. The driver swerved to avoid a person who was definitely not there and the car flipped. Everyone was okay though

It's really obvious in a lot of ways but the differences between eras is really stark. I would agree X-Files is just generally better but also a lot of modern television in general kind of stretches things out while simultaneously having way fewer episodes. Interesting shifts idk
