The lifetime return to college remains enormous: four years of study adds more than a million dollars to expected earnings. And that yields a funny conclusion that I like to remind my students about: It may not feel like it, but these might be the highest earning years of your career.

my one "is bluesky dying" contribution is that this place is far and away more useful for academic stuff at this point, like asking questions here has a very large chance of rendering useful answers, for me (the protagonist of reality) at least. so I think that does give it some staying power.

In what world do you get 'accepted' into US universities without actually applying to them? I imagine that maybe a letter encouraging application or something like that was sent. Perhaps it has been misremembered.

This makes housing go from “an important issue” to “an existentially important issue” imo. If the fastest growing state in the country is Texas or California might be life or death for democracy.
The “zoning is insufficient” people are ridiculous. The obvious response is “fine, then let’s radically relax the zoning, and move on to solving the next constraint”.

it was a California GOP town until the early 70s - University was developed as a car centric freeway off-ramp - motels, Dairy Queen, IHOP, multiple tire stores, etc.

This is infuriating and you should send it to every veteran you know, because while you can’t lose your civilian job while you’re activated, they don’t have to pay you, and you can’t get the mortgage pause until you’ve been activated a month. American Legion & VFW should be on fire.
