🧵 I was really more hopeful when Carney was elected. I thought, since he promised to fight for Canada and had a good track record on the climate crisis, and promised not to cut social programs, we might be OK. I voted NDP, but I had some hope. I no longer have hope for this government.

🧵 I don't know why I do this to myself but anyways... it's September 3rd, OTD in 1939, the UK joined France and Poland in the war with Nazi Germany. Contrary to revisionist theories I've seen On Here, like the USA, at no point was the UK anywhere close to being on the side of Nazi Germany.
Ian (@ianagp.bsky.social) reply parent
Probably the most pro-Nazi western leader was Canadian PM Mackenzie-King. Canada's war declaration followed a week after the British and once again, his sympathies didn't translate into support in any tangible way.
Ian (@ianagp.bsky.social) reply parent
Appeasement was a bad idea, and failed, but not because they wished to see Nazi Germany succeed, so much as they wished for equilibrium in Europe. The Great War cast an immense shadow. Admiration for Hitler simply wasn't something that carried over into deed.
Ian (@ianagp.bsky.social) reply parent
The alliance with France, shaky and poorly executed, was a cornerstone of their deplomacy in this period. To say they wished to align with the Nazis therefor completely ignores their one overriding geopolitical priority for the entire period.
Ian (@ianagp.bsky.social) reply parent
The notion they'd have supported Germany if they'd only attacked communists is true assuming none of the events of 1921-1939 happened, which means it's a meaningless assertion. The one overriding policy of the UK government was avoiding a repeat of WW1 and that's the lens that makes analytic sense.
Ian (@ianagp.bsky.social) reply parent
There absolutely was a desire to let the Nazis do what they wished but geopolitics were decisive. The UKs foreign policy was one of keeping the balance of power in Europe along with their ally, France. Their opposition to Hitler was realpolitik more than ideology.
Ian (@ianagp.bsky.social) reply parent
This did not translate into anything resembling support in society or in foreign policy. The UK had their own fascists, the British Union of Fascists led by Oswald Mosley. The royal family also had some support for hitler especially King Edward VIII. However, this did not shift foreign policy.
Ian (@ianagp.bsky.social) reply parent
Anti-communism was a powerful force from 1917 onward but this did not translate into the British Government's opposition to the Nazis, which had fully developed by 1938. Yes the UK was happy to see Germany fight communism. There were notable pro-Nazis within the British ruling classes.
