Right, I mean the NYT pre-writes obits all the time based on the principle of "it has to happen at some point, probably soon"
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
I wish to god I could have seen them live at the peak like that, insanely jealous

Cool, well keep it to yourself next time
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
A very, very minor little flourish in a long and storied career but it makes me smile whenever I hear it, "damn that was cool"
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
Of course!
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
Yeah it's wild, he obviously has always had a pretty limited range vocally but damned if he wasn't able to make the most of it
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com)
It was super cool to get so many responses full of admiration for Mark Knopfler tonight and I wanted to share one more thing, which is how after the intro to Tunnel of Love, just as the beat kicks in, he revs the guitar like a motorcycle (at about 0:33)
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
Got to hang out with some OLD school Delmarva people this weekend and it was hilarious to hear them talking about Ceauxvid

Obviously because I want that to be the case I am shoehorning every new piece of information into a "Trump is dead" framework but that is my prerogative as an internet user

Oh I think that's a perfect way to put it

I hate everything about the current moment in time except for the fact that everything the White House posts to convince us Trump is alive makes him seem more extremely dead

This is silly in the grand scheme of his oeuvre but I love how when the beat kicks in in Tunnel of Love he revs the guitar like a motorcycle

I need some expensive headphones and a joint, I want to go into outer space
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
It's very simple, you just need to play a walking bass part and the melody at the same time
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
Anyway - if you've wondered where it was Knopfler started and developed his sound from, it's this guy:
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
Yes! I think they had that setup for Night In London and it's fantastic
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent

Oh yeah, he's a massive history geek - Sailing to Philadelphia (with James Taylor!) is great, I love his tune about Napoleon's Grand Armee

Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
And of course there was this one
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
By that time he'd done a few film soundtracks - *Newcastle United (sorry about earlier) fans know this one
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
I was convinced I was the only person who had ever heard this one, I love it
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
whoops!!!
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
He's been my favorite for ages, I'm a bit sheepish about it because Dire Straits is solidly dad rock, but that for me is the Platonic ideal of guitar playing
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
This performance was 13 years later, when Knopfler released his first solo record, Golden Heart - it features his iconic National Style "O"
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
Definitely a guitar player's guitar player
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
No question about it, completely different leagues
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent

The thumbnail is extremely promising
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
You can't watch this and not want a red Stratocaster
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
Knopfler was (and is) a huge fan and devotee of Chet Atkins' fingerpicking style and one of the layers to Sultans is him showing an absolute mastery of that and recontextualizing it - it's a rockabilly song in a haunting minor key but is still upbeat and fun
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
But yeah - Knopfler's vocal range is pretty limited, but he adds in these transcendent guitar phrases that provide all the melody you could ever need
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
Telegraph Road is special to me, my grandfather moved to Detroit to work as a pipefitter for Ford, and they lived in a little tract house right off Telegraph in Taylor
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
The sense I got was that they were unknowns who played around local bars (Harry's got a regular day job, the other guys make it work somehow) and the narrator is just captivated by their moment on stage in a South London pub
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
There's a newish 8 CD set of live recordings from 1982-1992, definitely worth listening to some favorites on that!
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
Yeah, they really pulled all the stops out in their live shows
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
Nah man you're alright
Ian Boudreau (@ianboudreau.com) reply parent
Yeah! On the one hand, it's arguably low effort stuff, but it can really be heartfelt and it's fun to experience something new through someone else's eyes - harmless at worst I think

The Sultans are hard to pin down because he talks about a honky tonk piano and switching to Creole at one point. So it's not clear exactly what they're playing!
