Socialist NYC tenant lawyer, dad/husband, music fan, home cook. Lurking till someone posts about housing, or hates on poor people, or complains about the deficit. Rent control gives you the power to tell the landlord to go to hell.

He knows how to organize. That skill translates into political power. He got 50,000 to knock on doors for him. He can get people to phone bank and door knock for his issues. A forgotten playbook, but still an effective one.

Extreme? They have no sense of history. Kingston NY rolled back rents 15% two years ago. A rent freeze is mild by comparison. LaGuardia set up free City-run hospitals and universities. Five groceries, or free buses, are mild by comparison. We have public schools, so free daycare isn't radical.

Trump firmly believes in a genetic hierarchy of races. It comes out very frequently. Here, and whenever he calls someone (usually Black and Hispanic women) "Low IQ." It comes out when he talks about his uncle teaching at MIT. If there are categories of racism, surely this is the worst kind.

It's a hard moral conundrum. But Scalia's writing, although admired, wasn't all that his fans crack it up to be: poor thinking makes poor legal writing, however pithy it might be. He never conveyed that his opponents' beliefs are valid, a style suited to briefs, not opinions.
If I Were King (@ifiwasdaking.bsky.social) reply parent
I agree. I am still sad that he blocked me, over a year ago. (Over, IIRC, what I thought were some unexamined YIMBY assumptions about housing, maybe the only subject about which I claim some expertise). I never got to apologize or hash it out. He's missed in my feed.
If I Were King (@ifiwasdaking.bsky.social) reply parent
Saying that someone is a good writer even though he's a bigot isn't really a very positive thing to say. The real question is why anyone would admire Scalia for his writing, knowing he was a bigot. To me, it's the same "yuck" factor as watching Woody Allen movies, which I used to love.

If I Were King (@ifiwasdaking.bsky.social) reply parent
Actually, it is, and has been since at least the mid 1930s, the core constituency of the democratic base. Has the history I have cited to you proves, without the left, the party consistently loses national elections. It is obvious by now that you have no proof to offer to the contrary.
