The good news is that the Library of Babel definitely has them. The bad news is,

I was talking to a guy who just moved to Philly & said he didn't want to take the El until he has his concealed carry permit. I tried to be diplomatic about urging him to reconsider, but what I really wanted to say was "if you think you need a gun to ride the train, *you* are a danger to the public"

I just watched Decline of Western Civilization Part 2 and based on those interviews, within the hair metal scene lipstick seems like the controversial dividing line between "I'm such a manly man that I can dress like THIS to get chicks!!" and "nah, performing masculinity isn't what I'm here for"

We're in the "buy our healthful radium tonic!" phase of things right now. Except back then US economic growth wasn't mostly being propped up by Big Radium.

Kodama if I'm trying to win, Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar if I'm trying to say "Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar" at every opportunity. Spent a weekend in 2021 training myself to rattle it off effortlessly and now's the time to reap those rewards

I don't think I'd actually seen Baby Jane yet when this first ran, so the "basket" version of the quote is the one lodged more deeply in my brain

This is a scarier concept tbh. Like if it's hills in general, that's just something I'm learning about hills. But if it's only the one, what's going on with that weird hill!

I recently watched the 1939 Yiddish-language film of Tevye, and it's very grim in ways that make perfect sense for the story but cause a lot of cognitive dissonance for a viewer who's used to the Fiddler version. Also there's no shtetl - the family lives isolated among pogrom-happy gentiles!

Pretty sure standard red light practice in Philly at this point is "if I saw it before it turned red, I'm going through." In probably unrelated news, I keep walking by little patches of broken plastic that used to be headlights.

My North By Northwest discourse is that Eva Marie Saint voiced Katara on The Legend of Korra. The woman just turned 101 a few weeks ago, had an eight-decade acting career, and got to dirty-talk Cary Grant to the full extent that 1959 would allow. What a life!

The patterns on the cover of Dawn do evoke DNA helices, but you kind of have to already be looking for it. It's been long enough since I read them that I'm not sure if there's similar things going on with the other two

I saw one in Center City a few days ago and it looked... greasy? Like a dirty kitchen appliance. Given how ridiculous the cleaning protocols are, I wonder how long it's going to be before we get the first full-on Cyberrustbuckets

The episode opens with a big-box store worker turning off motion smoothing on a display tv. I think "plot point" might be putting it too strongly, and to the extent that it does affect the plot later, it's because he's turned it off - so not a lot of depiction.

It was definitely Cats until I watched Cats this year. Now it's probably back to being either Twilight thanks to reading/watching backlash stuff back in the day, or one of the later Harry Potters where I aged out of caring between the book and the movie

Seeing Gwendolyn Christie back for the finale made me realize that Severance shares a lot of sensibilities with Peter Strickland's movies. A mysterious "normal" that's not the one you're used to. (Duke of Burgundy's my favorite, In Fabric maybe most Severance-y, Flux Gourmet has the most Christie)

What's interesting to me is that it's an article from a college paper, & the interviewee who says "DVDs look better" is also a college student. Are the Kids These Days maybe just calling all discs DVDs? Or maybe idealizing the limits of old technology as an aesthetic, like xers/millennials with VHS?

The main drivers of gambling/speculation have been specific judicial rulings & regulatory changes, because we used to have more legal guardrails against rich people fleecing normal people, but the right has been working to dismantle those. All of this is part of the world they want.
