Mogg to advise Farage on ‘how to govern’. He spent just 3 years in government, 2.5 of which were being a court jester Leader of the House, not exactly a great office of state, then the absurd Minister for Brexit Opportunities, then 49 days at Business. He then lost his seat. 🤦🏻♂️

I accept that Reform right now are leading in the polls. What I struggle to conflate that with is how ~65%+ of leave voters regret that choice (and would accept FM). Most Rfm supporters apparently regret the leave vote. Don't get it.
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
Of course they didn't. I wanted to get rid of the Tories. Labour was the sensible vote in my area. Labour weren't campaigning on rejoin. Calculated punt. FPTP. Refer to my earlier comment. Who knows what'll happen in 4 years.
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
Here you go patronizing again. I'm well aware immigration is not just a UK issue. I'm in Italy now as it happens. I hear it. I don't know what axe you're grinding - at some point one party is going to have to dip it's toe into the rejoin CU/SM/EU pool - that is inevitable. That's all I'm saying.
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
I think "voters" have been bamboozled (Sagan) with a massive red herring in the guise of "immigration". I think Brussels knows that. Bxl can play the long game. UK, on the other hand, has an existential 4-5% hole in it's GDP that can be plugged easily. The bamboozle can only go on so long. I hope.
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
I hear you. My goodness I hear you. If only it was that simple given our FPTP system. More people voted for remain parties in 2019 aka "the Brexit exection". How did that work out?
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
Happy for you EU citizen. My EU citizenship was robbed from me. Very very unhappy about that.
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
I realise it's not a simple "can I join?", "yes". Of course that's not how it works. My point was that, at some point "a" party has to kick that conversation up a notch, IE make meaningful steps to actually joining SM/CU, EU, whatever, whichever.
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
whatever... you keep beating your little drum... as I said.. we will see.
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh give over Miss Anonymous. It's a matter of time. You know it and (most) every batshit crazy brexiter knows it. Tick tock. Not saying it'll happen next GE.. but it will.
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
You don't need to patronize me. Four years is a long time. We will see. My bet is that Farage's army will fizzle out.
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
This knife-edge Starmer is walking won't last long. It is inevitable we will be back in the EU in some form or fashion before too long. I disagree the voter is ok about Brexit, polls would absolutely dictate otherwise. Which party will lead us back in?

Speaking more broadly though, I'm sure that with the myriad benefits and whatnot that people receive because of this and that, an extra benefit called WFP going to those that need it wouldn't be a stretch.
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm an IT guy. If the problem is that they're not linked then the answer would simply be then to link them. And yes I realise "simply" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.

I too agree with the Gordster and would probably advocate those on the middle tax tier should also not receive WFP. My Q to you though is .. what constraint do you think might this be?

Fair enough - my point really is that Brexit is evidently very detrimental to the economy and 'they' just don't talk about it. Why do they seemingly prefer take the political hits they do (WFP, Farmers, PIP etc) when they have the perfect economic boogeyman in the form of Brexit.
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent

I'm getting there. I more-or-less get the mechanics of MMT. And yes I know Sterling de-coupled from gold like ~100 years ago and only linked back to gold by proxy due to BW 'til 71... I get all that.. it's the political side of it (like so much else) that does my nut in.
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
If our govt is indeed "doing" MMT, and I suspect we are, brings me back to my original question. Why do they create so many headaches for themselves?
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
The narrative the govt/media peddles suggests they have to balance the books like a household or business. We know that under an MMT way of looking at things this isn't true. Are we "doing" MMT now or are we just saying if we had MMT none of this spending stuff would be a problem?
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
So when you talk of the "MMT view"… it sounds like it's an alternate way of looking at things. That is to say we're doing something this way, but if you look at it that way it's xx.
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
And taxes are used to control the inflation. Fascinating stuff.
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
Don't even get me started on Starmer's "red lines" on Brexit. Let me ask you this, then. There must be some cost somewhere in creating £s. Can't have something for nothing. Too good to be true and all that. What's the downside to printing money?
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
Even if creating £'s is perceived as a bad by some, it's got to be less bad than the media fire that's upon them now?
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
Thanks - see, I get all that. I just don't understand why the govt doesn't just quietly use this to fix what needs fixing. Why does it seemingly prefer to create the political bonfires of pissing off pensioners, farmers, disabled etc.
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
I will look at those tomorrow thanks. Will that answer the political aspect though?

MMT tells us we can spend £'s as we need to - why does gov persist with this 'there is no money' schtick when it gains nothing politically?
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
Why don't they just get on with the good stuff of righting all the wrongs? I'm not saying things like WFA, Farmers IHT, disability payments can't be tweaked, but what Labour are doing is tantamount to political suicide.
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
Genuine Q Chris. I presume you're talking MMT. If you (& others) understand this. I'm trying to learn about it.. it's kinda making sense from a theoretical POV, what I don't get is why do they make the choices they do?
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
Hogwash. I submit plenty online. It's easy, takes a minute at most and they pay out in a few days. Arguably the only bit of the train system in this country that actually works!
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent

Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
People don't think, that's why.
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
If that's the case then I find it sad that people can be so fickle. How can people reasonably think any meaningful change could occur in 6 months?
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
I guess. And maybe Brexit isn't everyone's main issue. Sigh.
Iain H (@ihrdcs.bsky.social) reply parent
On one hand we have Yougov polls that show most people now think Brexit is failing and we should rejoin, yet on the other hand this and other polls show swings to Reform PLC. I don't get it?

If it takes 10 years to rejoin the EU, then if we start today, we'll be back in 10 years. But if we wait a decade, it will take 20 years. Except that it won't, because we will have had 10 more years of diverging. So it might take a quarter of a century. Start today please. We owe it to the future.
