This just clogs up AA and makes it feel like more dealers, PLUS there’s no way to compete as just an artist with an iPad or sketchbook, with someone who has a whole huge flashy booth with merch and lights and banners. Even as a vet
More cons need to run AAs this way AND have policies to prevent overflow from Dealers. Like applying for one forfeits your opportunity for the other. So you don’t have AAs getting flooded with raffle applicants who didn’t get into dealers.
Like, there’s few things more agitating than for a vet artist in the community than to have to wait for a raffle basically when the con starts for AA. If you’re just an artist, not tryna run a whole merch operation, the fandom has gotten kinda bleak.
Also megaplex was the best vending experience I had at a con in an artist alley. The year I went they didn’t have a raffle. The sold slots months in advance and built the AA to match size. And if reservations were abandoned, those became FCFS. It was a great system for veterans and newbies.
I think my favorite at the moment is megaplex (at the current local, and after the ban of minors). FWA is my home con it’s a lot of fun, I live pretty close, but megaplex actually has me feeling rested when I head home. FWA is manic, very fun, but manic. So modern megaplex still takes the crown.
I don’t know enough about internal workings or policy to conclude more than that. Staff growth and attendance growth do not match proportionally. That is and has always been FWA‘s struggle in my experience. Manpower and logistics, not space.
FWA is very much not running out of room, they do have logistics issues where the con grows faster than they have the staff and manpower to effectively manage, but that is not about room. That’s just a consequence of the past few years of growth after Covid.
We need to start speaking up- no- YELLING to support and defend trans people. If you're in the USA, call your legislators. Literally email and call your representatives. Cis people have the loudest voices right now and those voices MUST be used to protect trans people.
More broadly, VFX bloat is at least 90% a result of poor planning, poor management , and execs/leads generallu treating artists and studios like a black box they email to receive infinite executions, revisions and costly minor variations around the clock and on demand
