transit cuts are virtually guaranteed in the coming months and years, high school music directors are not paid fairly so there will be no music at high school sports events, and for some reason it's 73 degrees at 71% humidity at 11:30PM in September. WE'RE DOING GREAT OVER HERE.

powells books is using AI art for merch and laying off workers, the mayor suggested our fascist pres should walz in and bulldoze homeless campments unless we volunteer and give money, the mayor fled a public Q&A because protesters showed up, our only Black-owned brewery closed it's final location

I can see why he and his security detail would want to get out of there for a variety of reasons, they seemed surprisingly unprepared for a protest. I figure this is only the beginning of how activists are going to approach his appearances, especially if he continues with a run and bunker strategy.
intersect (@intersections.bsky.social) reply parent
To add to Cassie's point, Hardesty was also very good at listening and talking to protesters. What Wilson did, escaping to leave everybody hanging and no one satisfied, does not instill a strong sense of leadership.
intersect (@intersections.bsky.social) reply parent
Compared to how a Councilor recently handled a similar situation it makes me wonder if Wilson has what it takes to lead the city through this moment.
intersect (@intersections.bsky.social) reply parent
Do not have a particular bone to pick on this one but it is rather telling how many various groups in the city are rather desperate for the Mayor's time, attention and accountability. Sure he's picking up trash on the way to work 7 days a week but not exactly making himself available to the public.

This learning experience is an opportunity to open the scope of our vision for urban planning in Portland. It can be better. I’m already in Vienna and it IS better. Socialized housing and healthcare = less homelessness and mental health crises.

The vibes among Portland brewers, with a few exceptions, are absolutely dismal. The city and state really needs to do more to boost this industry before it's too late.

Recipients who received the half-price fare discount ended up taking so many more transit trips that the overall amount they spent on transit fares actually *went up*. This suggests that a deep discount in transit fares for low-income residents could actually be a net revenue boost for agencies!

There is/was a vision to do this along the length of SW Ankeny. We did get that one little stub of it. Now we're more focused on tearing out the street plazas for some reason. The bus mall used to be car free back in the day. This all to say: agreed.

It's a very cool building. I'm sure the projects are different in various ways. I would not call it anything resembling a community center, more of a luxury spa/hotel/restaurant with a coffee shop but it's brought some chutzpah to Alberta street and I appreciate the architecture inside and out.

My dream concept as well, however I don't think we have a remote chance of executing on this aside from after The Big One. That said I wish ODOT would truly, meaningfully study moving and deleting certain on/off ramps. We asked for it in their charettes in like 2011 and they literally laughed at us

Good points, I also question the market demand for building on top of the freeway when most of the RQ area land is ripe for redevelopment and doesn't require all of the complications of building over the freeway. I do appreciate the forward thinking of making them buildable for the long term future.

Gotcha, in NY instance I don't think these are caps they are straddling / built over. Buildable caps / decks are a different thing, and for RQ we tasked ODOT to do it as part of the project. In fairness, it is a tricky thing for ODOT to do, and without a real plan for what building if any is to come
