I don't have an answer. I wish I did. But I hope Bluesky understands they have no real hold on me or any of us. If we find an alternative, decide as a fandom on an alternative, it will be easy peasy for us to switch. Bluesky, you are not indispensable. Fix your souls.
So, where do we go from here? Is there someplace to go? Or have we reached the point where we recognize that being online this much is unhealthy, unwise, and gives people who do not have our best interests anywhere in their minds or hearts too much access to us?
I imagine most furs have similar experiences. "The presence of furries indicates a safe/healthy online ecosystem," may be trite, but there's some truth to it. Bluesky has shown once again it's not on our side, not on the side of LGBTQ+, minorities, or victims of genocide.
What do we do about it? What can we do about it? Bluesky isn't listening. I'm furry, I've used more than a half dozen chat applications, several MUCK emulators, multiple websites for gallery purposes, and now a couple social media sites. I'm used to moving when shit gets shut down or unsafe.
So I think it's apparent that the Bluesky moderation team failed us in this moment. The bans all punched down and left actual threatening content untouched and unpunished. Bluesky also seems to be immune to justified anger at this, ignoring all criticism and calls for explanations and change.
This gets to something that as a former stand-up I recognized but couldn’t name. A 31 year old professional content creator baiting 19 year old amateurs into the format of his choice isn’t debate, it’s crowd work. It’s debate-shaped crowd work farmed for content.
Just a reminder: It's YOUR social media feed. You can block anyone you want for any reason you want and you don't owe anyone an explanation. Your time and attention are priceless. That's why so many people want to claim it for themselves. Don't give it to anyone you don't want to.
