Anyway, like I said, I’m not a biblical literalist. You apparently are, so when you read the Bible and you say “this isn’t a history textbook” you think that means it’s worthless instead of thinking that maybe people throughout history have had the ability to write in metaphor and allegory

When he saw the winter solstice, and saw that the day was steadily increasing, he said, “It’s the way of the world!” He went and made eight festival days. The next year he made them all festival days.

Our sages taught: when First Adam saw the day was steadily decreasing, he said “Woe is me! Maybe since I sinned the world is darkening due to me and returning to primordial chaos, and it is death decreed upon me from heaven.” He stood and sat eight days in prayer and fasting.

Isaac (from the Internet) Gantwerk Mayer (@isaacgantwerkmayer.bsky.social) reply parent
Also “the date come from Mithraism“ nah, fam, the date comes from when the winter solstice happens. In the Roman calendar the solstice fell on the 25th. Antiochus of Athens called 25th December the birthday of the sun in the second century CE.
Isaac (from the Internet) Gantwerk Mayer (@isaacgantwerkmayer.bsky.social) reply parent
My favorite example is the festival of Ceri because it is entirely possible that we can trace that back to before the Roman empire - there are customs done in Gubbio, Italy to this day every May 15 which might trace back to the Umbrians archive.org/details/bron...
Isaac (from the Internet) Gantwerk Mayer (@isaacgantwerkmayer.bsky.social) reply parent
I guess, but while there is an enormous amount of Christian practice which comes from pagan customs (Day of the Dead obviously, Saint Brigid‘s Day, the festival of Ceri, the yule lads) the Christmas tree is very much not among them
Isaac (from the Internet) Gantwerk Mayer (@isaacgantwerkmayer.bsky.social) reply parent
Bringing a tree into your house and decorating it with a bunch of lights and singing songs about how noble the branches of the tree are and putting presents under the tree, that’s all Christian rituals invented by Christians and performed by Christians for the Christian winter solstice festival
Isaac (from the Internet) Gantwerk Mayer (@isaacgantwerkmayer.bsky.social) reply parent
Christmas is actually one of the best examples of the weird aspect of Protestantism where they think whatever THEY do is tradition, but whatever everybody ELSE does is ritual, even though 100% they do a bunch of rituals every Christmas, but they just don’t consider them that
Isaac (from the Internet) Gantwerk Mayer (@isaacgantwerkmayer.bsky.social) reply parent
Like it’s kind of unfair to compare the two. Day of the Dead is a Catholic adaptation of Aztec rituals. The Christmas tree was invented by Christians in Germany in the 16th century and was always done by Christians and has nothing to do with anything that isn’t Christian at all. It’s not even pagan!
Isaac (from the Internet) Gantwerk Mayer (@isaacgantwerkmayer.bsky.social) reply parent
But also, the day of the dead actually much closer to an original pagan practice than the Christmas tree which was invented and developed entirely by Christians and has nothing to do with any actual pagan rituals that have been recorded
Isaac (from the Internet) Gantwerk Mayer (@isaacgantwerkmayer.bsky.social) reply parent
People light lights in winter because it’s dark. People gather together in winter because it’s boring. People drink booze in winter because it’s cold. People sing songs in winter because that’s what people end up doing when they’re together drinking booze.
Isaac (from the Internet) Gantwerk Mayer (@isaacgantwerkmayer.bsky.social) reply parent
Winter solstice festivals are nearly universal, and there is very little in Christmas that needs to be traced back to any specific pagan ritual rather than just things people do in winter
Isaac (from the Internet) Gantwerk Mayer (@isaacgantwerkmayer.bsky.social) reply parent
if there were, then it would be found in Italy instead of Germany. And it definitely has nothing to do with Yule, which was more or less dead in Germany centuries before the tree became a thing
Isaac (from the Internet) Gantwerk Mayer (@isaacgantwerkmayer.bsky.social) reply parent
It really isn’t. Like, there’s a bunch of Victorian nonsense that people made up trying to trace back pagan legends behind this stuff, but the Christmas tree was invented in the 16th century by German Lutherans. There’s absolutely no evidence that the tree has any links to Saturnalia.
