Christmas is actually one of the best examples of the weird aspect of Protestantism where they think whatever THEY do is tradition, but whatever everybody ELSE does is ritual, even though 100% they do a bunch of rituals every Christmas, but they just don’t consider them that
Like it’s kind of unfair to compare the two. Day of the Dead is a Catholic adaptation of Aztec rituals. The Christmas tree was invented by Christians in Germany in the 16th century and was always done by Christians and has nothing to do with anything that isn’t Christian at all. It’s not even pagan!
But also, the day of the dead actually much closer to an original pagan practice than the Christmas tree which was invented and developed entirely by Christians and has nothing to do with any actual pagan rituals that have been recorded
People light lights in winter because it’s dark. People gather together in winter because it’s boring. People drink booze in winter because it’s cold. People sing songs in winter because that’s what people end up doing when they’re together drinking booze.
Winter solstice festivals are nearly universal, and there is very little in Christmas that needs to be traced back to any specific pagan ritual rather than just things people do in winter
