On June 24, I began my Election Night speech by quoting Mandela: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” That's the spirit of this campaign, and our city. This is "Until It’s Done,” a new series about New Yorkers who refused to accept that a worthy goal was impossible.

additional context about the role of Archibishop Cousins during Milwaukee’s open housing marches

ARCHDIOCESE of MILWAUKEE John XXIII's announcement of the Second Vatican Council. During the council, Cousins was a member of the Commissions on Communications Media and the Lay Apostolate. He also served on several commissions before and after the council. During his time as archbishop, Cousins worked to implement the changes directed by the council in one of the most uncertain times in the history of the archdiocese. It is speculated that his even hand spared the archdiocese the level of polarization experienced in other American dioceses of the post-conciliar time. Cousins saw the social upheaval of the civil rights and peace movements during his episcopacy. The civil rights marches led by Fr. James Groppi resulted in much pressure on Cousins to sanction the priest and others involved. Throughout the controversy, however, he maintained his evenhanded nature. Cousins strongly supported open housing and affirmed the efforts of those working on the issue, though he did not condone all of their tactics.

Now that President Trump has approved the disaster declaration for August’s flooding in Milwaukee County, residents can apply for individual assistance directly with FEMA. Please share this information with anyone you know whose home was damaged from the flooding. HT @davidcrowleywi.bsky.social

Residents who sustained losses and damage to their homes are now able to apply for FEMA Individual Assistance online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-3362. Please note that previous damage assessments performed by Milwaukee County OEM, WEM, or FEMA, as well as damage reports to 211 or MMSD do not result in federal aid. You must apply separately for FEMA assistance. To be eligible for assistance, the resident must meet the following qualifications: • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or qualified alien. • FEMA must be able to confirm your identity. • Your damaged home is your primary residence. • Your insurance, or other forms of disaster assistance received, cannot meet your disaster-caused needs. • Your necessary expenses and serious needs are directly caused by a declared disaster

“They are a progressive city, and they don’t want the president’s help. That’s on them. It’s horrific that they don’t want President Trump’s help.” “Chicago should be begging Donald Trump for help to keep Chicago safe,” Bondi added. “Yet, they aren’t so we’re going to go into a city who wants us there.”

RIP to Milwaukee’s former poet laureate Susan Firer rereading her tonight & have to share her poem she used as the title of her collection: “Milwaukee Does Strange Things to People” to all who knew her: may her memory be a blessing

Cover of the book “Milwaukee Does Strange Things To People NEW & SELECTED POEMS 1979-2007” by SUSAN FIRER Milwaukee Does Strange Things to People at the once Mr. Nude America, the now-deceased Dick Bacon, who sunbathed all 40 below winter along the lake in a circle of aluminum reflectors. Listen to Sigmund Snopek's take on Milwaukee: Out of Control! Since shore fishing was made illegal everyone's gone nuts. It used to be so lovely to walk around the shore fires and watch the fishers raising and lowering their nets in firelights, watch them bite the heads off their first live catches. Now they fish off Jones Island, bring tents, & TVs, & Smoky Joe grills, loud music-sometimes do you also question progress?) In Milwaukee, as many people die of poems as drive-by shootings. Famous people visit and remark on the girth of the residents. The largest girdle ever sold was sold in Milwaukee. Look, you don't want me to get all sentimental and lie to you, do you? I mean I don't think I'd want to be Mayor of this place. (You'd always have to eat too many fried foods at festivals and sing German & Polish songs. People would expect you to solve all their problems: baseball stadiums, graffiti, crime, which German restaurant to take visiting dignitaries to.) But I do want you to know this city is nicer than you could imagine, even if Money magazine once rated it 177th in the nation. Picture this: driving along the lake cargo ships in the distance, too many sailboats to count, their sails collecting God & sun, playing the hometown's own Sammy Llanas singing Patsy Cline's
