Oh look a thread in which I might relevantly promote my idea for a next generation Bond: an immigrant twenty something boy from Mexico who teaches MI6 that they don't know everything. I haven't been kidding this whole time and I'm still not. He would absolutely dominate that role.

Like for real: Rabbit (in Winnie the Pooh) lives among immortal beings favored by the gods (Christopher) who haphazardly mutilate each other _all the time_ and simply don't care a dime because they'll just reattach their goddamn arm. The panicked anxiety Rabbit must feel every day of his existence.

PS I've read the Tao of Pooh but only after realizing all this while introducing my favorite childhood stories to my own son 😊
Theodore Painsworth (@itty53.bsky.social) reply parent
It's because they're mortal: they can die, they have families and even children, we can assume. The stuffed animals don't give a fuck about the hundred acre wood flooding precisely because they _can't die_. They can't even be permanently dismembered. It's why Rabbit is so terrified of his world.
Theodore Painsworth (@itty53.bsky.social) reply parent
The best childhood stories read differently when you're an adult. Look at the differences between the living characters (Rabbit, Owl, Gopher) and the stuffed animals (all the others). Every time things go to hell, the living are running wild trying to save themselves and their belongings.

One of the best decisions they made was to not use any big names (apart from Olyphant). It really changes the way it's watched. Olyphant being the exception though, he's not in his normal role at all. He's exactly the antithesis of the normal intensity he brings and that's awesome too.

Not like, "is". It is the exact same thing. Because you could theoretically run through an LLM manually with a stack of paper and a pencil. Like any function in programming. If you don't think a stack of paper can turn sentient, then you don't think an LLM can turn sentient.

Not all fresh water is potable. You're comparing apples to oranges because you're hung up on semantics. And I'm going to repeat myself: this is better thought of as a research facility than an industrial plant. It doesn't need to be profitable or efficient to fill its purpose, which is research.
Theodore Painsworth (@itty53.bsky.social) reply parent
It is a logistics solution, it is not a physics solution. Funnily, it's also a chemical solution but that's besides the point. I'm gonna assume you were just waking up before coffee or something, because absolutely nobody was insinuating this is some magical, physics-breaking free energy machine.

Think of it more like a research lab for new technologies than a power plant and suddenly the slight efficiency gained is a bit more important.
Theodore Painsworth (@itty53.bsky.social) reply parent
Because desalination requires lots of energy and a chunk of that energy is just moving the water to the desal plant itself. So you want power resources next to the water resources you're going to be utilizing, and vice versa. This is a good solution to both.
