That game was there for them if having the one guy in there wasn’t a 100% tell for a quarterback draw

Is it the fever or is this game unusually dumb?
Ian Campbell (@iwcampbell.bsky.social)
I’m really glad I tested in the middle of the night when I still just had a sore throat and drainage. Faintest possible positive line on the test. 16 hours later…I’m not critical but the sinuses are worse and the fever is 102. Everything else aside, would have sucked to be on a plane for 12 hours.

If you cannot leave my long 19th century classroom without saying “Roads! Schools! The army!” on demand, you get the stocks. This is that carceral pedagogy you hear so much about.

My favorite thing about this guy is it’s the only kind of home run he hits. He’s what third-grade me would have sketched as “awesome baseball player” but an actual living guy.

but also: if he wanted to call it Donald's Big Beautiful Language Grant or whatever the hell, I'd probably take the deal if we got them back. Brings me back to the initial point -- it is just degrading to live this way.
Ian Campbell (@iwcampbell.bsky.social) reply parent
yeah we're in this spot where both the material and symbolic damage is pretty severe. Like it's fundamentally offensive to name a student grant program after a man who famously bilked people out of millions with a fake university.
Ian Campbell (@iwcampbell.bsky.social)
You know what, fuck it. If we have to call them “Trump Grants” to keep them, whatever. I just so deeply hate that we have to live like this.
Ian Campbell (@iwcampbell.bsky.social) reply parent
It kind of has to be missing from the Discourse because that would have to acknowledge that the reasons that women pretty universally have less babies when they're able -- care work, the actual experience of pregnancy and birth -- are things you can't Numbers Fuckstein your way out of.
Ian Campbell (@iwcampbell.bsky.social)
This is a good point. In general (and I’m not trying to offend; there are posters I like covering this from every angle) it seems to me than men and women are talking about this issue very differently. It would behoove us, as men, to think about that a bit!
Ian Campbell (@iwcampbell.bsky.social) reply parent
You simply can’t tax credit your way out of what pregnancy and childbirth actually, physically are. And in a liberal society the greatest good involves the people assuming that risk deciding whether or not, or how often, they want to do so. Everything else is noise.
Ian Campbell (@iwcampbell.bsky.social)
I cannot believe this site is talking about birth rates AGAIN but here’s one relevant bit of anecdata: within my (educated, middle class) social circle there is one woman who died in childbirth and two more who easily could have.

One of the more frustrating aspects of the discussion to me (not a public health expert) is that to a first approximation…it worked? We got a vaccine and an effective treatment and vastly reduced the number of dead and disabled. With no roadmap. That’s a Goddamn triumph.
Ian Campbell (@iwcampbell.bsky.social) reply parent
I think my actual take on this is that a lot of people had a very unpleasant 2020 for reasons but included but weren’t limited to COVID and are still working out how they feel about that. The “not limited to” bit is what’s lurking behind a lot of these spats.
Ian Campbell (@iwcampbell.bsky.social)
I do think that with just one more debate on COVID closures we’ll probably figure out what the right answer was and will be able to safely return to relitigating the 2016 Democratic primary
