Well, I don't know (and I don't actually know that they don't) but if so, that makes the case that it's a management problem at PGMOL and not the officials themselves that's the problem
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
The technology itself is neutral. But "the employees are lousy" is the complaint of bad managers everywhere. If PGMOL does a better job of managing the officials, it will improve. And to the degree it is the officials, it's not like there's a bunch of much better ones waiting in the wings
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
You and I agree that VAR isn't fit for purpose. And I would say that naive but optimistic is my metier! Nonetheless, this continues to seem like the worst possible outcome - VAR does a poor job of improving outcomes, while further degrading respect for match officials
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
The call happened and multiple officials were involved. It should be enough to say that the match officials do a difficult job as best they can, and PGMOL is continually working to improve. This self-flagellation does nothing for anyone.
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social)
This continues to undermine a poor system. What is the point of this? They're not going to give King a goal or replay the match, the result stands. But officials are undermined as is the integrity of the game. Should managers say that when strikers miss chances that the player didn't do as trained?

I hope beyond reason that the Republic endures long enough for me to see this guy turned out on his ass by New Yorkers
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social)
It's kind funny how the New York Times is dealing with the criticism of their selective breaking news alerts email choices by just giving up the project entirely. It's just going to be the headlines and a couple of emails a day from Wirecutter going forward I guess.

I think that it would look nice with p.m. Sarr on the back, but that's just me
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
He started Collins in 40 of 43 matches in all competitions last year; rotation at the back is not something that has been part of his repertoire
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
She would if she could
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social)
My take on Spurs transfer window, if anyone cares is that Spurs are rather worse positioned than they were at this point of last season, and a little better positioned for seasons behind the current one. Anyway, maybe I'm wrong or the hamstrings will all be of titanium this year. Fingers crossed!

James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
It's funny because Glasner is in the last year of his deal and has refused to sign a new contract. But at the same time, losing him would be pretty calamitous for Palace, plus he's the obvious replacement for Amorim so they could still get compensation out of United in a little while
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
Seems like a decent consolation for having to leave London
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
I've seen it reported several times that exactly that happened. I think that it was a big mistake on the part of the club to ever let it reach that point.
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
Eh they get to keep their manager which seems worth a good bit of cash.
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, he's probably not going to go to Saudi... Reports are that there was a lot of interest early that Spurs rebuffed because they considered him too important to move without a replacement, which, well, erm, ok
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
Or that he would want to go there
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
They're also clearly going through it a bit - their manager threatened to resign today. So it's not exactly been smooth on their end
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
How do the kids put up with it? I would have been mortified to be picked up by my parents from high school.
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
It's not that any of them lack a vision, it's that none of them are successful enough to be able to implement that vision for more than a couple of years. Lange will be gone soon too. Center forward options like Richy, a near-record signing for Conte, and Solanke, the club-record for Ange remain
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
I have been fairly ok with the return of Paratici, but this entire period makes me feel like Spurs continue to lack a continuous strong football executive and that lack of vision is the main thing hampering the team
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social)
I will say my partner made this for the first time last night and it did absolutely kick ass, do recommend
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
They were only 8th in xG of course
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
I just think that it will not be broadly successful at Spurs.
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
They also paid several millions to Timo Werner

James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
I'd ask what Mcvities is, but honestly it sounds made up
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
He didn't love him enough to play him much last season
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social)
It's a little odd that I'm getting emails from Football.London making it seem like a deal for Savinho is still possible while BlueSky seems to think it's Kolo Muani plus keeping Solomon
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
I feel like Spurs have pursued one - Hicapie for example, though there were others rumored - and been thwarted
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
I suppose so, but he's been given 52 league starts over 3+ seasons with 3 different permanent managers plus a couple of interims. Despite all his virtues, none of them have loved playing him. 🤷
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
Doesn't matter what Bissouma can do if he can't persuade Tottenham managers to play him.
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
It would seem that Leeds haven't been interested in making a permanent move for him, that's been quiet for over a month.
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
Something wild must be happening in the player evaluation area: imagine looking at last season's Spurs and deciding the only players who you have faith in are Bentancur and Johnson
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social)
I was into a loan for Kolo Muani back in January but a purchase or loan with obligation seems like a bad move Spurs will regret
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, it's good to know that the medical staff issues are all sorted!
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social)
I wonder honestly if there was/is any market for Solomon whatsoever; I was pretty concerned that there wouldn't be.
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
Leicester, team of unerring wisdom who bought both Winks and Skipp. Eh. More likely they probably had deals with a lot of players to let them go if relegated. It's hard to do - Leeds had big issues with Gnonto last season. But I think El Khannouss has a lot of promise
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't really fret about his physicality at all. He's 5'11, he's underweight but he's 21 and he's got strength already. He's not Harvey Elliot
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
Not really when you look under the hood; Lookman was 27th in the top 5 leagues in NPxG+xA per 90; Johnson was 92nd.
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
A) eh B) no Unrelated C: too old, not really great enough to move the needle for me and I'm not desperate enough post-Simons
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
He's literally better than Johnson at everything 😂
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
I bet he'll cook there
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
Like Villa will be more interested in selling because they think their season is going to be bad? I'm not sure what one thing has to do with the other
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
We can just say it's the Curse of the International Break and move on.
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah; if there's not a bolder plan to be implemented, Frank's Spurs are going to lose a lot of matches when they give up the first goal
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
I just think that if the Frank era is hugely successful, we should call it the Danelaw
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
Look, I understand that yesterday was the worst defeat on English soil since Hastings, so I get it
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social)
It is absolutely insane that PGMOL is still making statements like this
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
This scenario seems much worse than your "true tactical failure". On a number of levels
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
What is the difference between a "tactical failure" and tactics that are based on overestimating the quality of the squad? That seems like two different ways of saying the same thing
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
Semenyo had a great match, but while I like him a lot, I don't covet him for Spurs. And ultimately if Spurs' double pivot can't pass and don't defend excellently, good LWs are going to feed on Porro all season. I'm more frustrated than they spent all the money on Tel to... not play him
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
Always felt like a move meant more to save face for executives than to really solve a problem for Spurs on the pitch.
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
Obviously, spend £100m on the guy on the left, what?
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
I'd think that signing Rogers would mean he would play on the left with Simons centrally, at least while Maddison and Kulusevski are still out. But with Simons signed, I also would be much more surprised to see Spurs really pursue Rogers. I don't see it.
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reposted
Always rooted against this guy, and still proud to do so
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
I think that it's a pure talent question: if you can sign players as good as Savinho, at that age, at any position, for a fee and salary that is manageable, you ought to do so
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, but I'm thinking about Semenyo pinning back Porro, allowing them to double up on Kudus and force Spurs to play through the middle or through Johnson, the limitation of set pieces in the final third. They kept Spurs where they wanted playing the ball where they wanted them to I thought
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
I think that it's hard to overstate the importance of contingency, but Iraola's plans sure worked, and if Frank had plans they were both ineffective and inscrutable
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social)
Spurs were quite poor, but also Bournemouth clearly had a plan for how to beat Spurs, and Spurs had no ideas how to cope with that plan until it was too late
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social)
It is truly remarkable the amount of difference Odobert for Johnson and Bergvall for Pahlinha does for Spurs' buildup
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
I will miss you, sweet dream of comparative advantage

James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
At some point, the fact that BlueCo is a bad faith counterparty has to have negative impacts to their ability to do business with other clubs and players, right? Or is everything I learned in my econ classes in school actually a lie?
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
A little from column a, a little from column b
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social)
Spurs have been lousy, and their defending just a moment ago was dreadful. But Simon Hooper is also having a howler
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
I'd like to see him take off Richy, Johnson and Pahlinha for Tel, Odobert and Bergvall but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
He is, but also Kudus' first touch has been very poor so far today
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social)

James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social)
"Palhinha please make a forward pass" He does once "Palhinha please don't try that again"
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social)
Sure seems like it might be useful for Spurs to be able to build up through the midfield but....
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social)
I really don't appreciate the reminder that Manor Solomon is still a Spurs player
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
🤬
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
I hear you too. I just think that the top left footed defenders who are going to move have moved. Lukeba is the only one left, and Spurs just bought a different Liepzig player. So I just don't know where Spurs are going to find a difference maker for that role at this point in the window
James Feldman (@jamesfeldman.bsky.social) reply parent
Fwiw, there are very few defenders who Spurs could conceivably acquire who represent anything close to the level of talent that Savinho does. Even though I agree that it's a need, Savinho would be a talent who would raise the ceiling of the club considerably

Likewise; I check Pitchfork's 8+ album reviews every couple of months and try to listen to the things they like that sound up my street. Plus, I could probably listen to a different Mingus album every month and not run out!

I'm sure my ignorance is helped by the fact that I'm middle aged and don't have kids! But yes, the movement away from radio certainly facilitates my ignorance of Swift (and Drake). I very rarely hear a piece of music that wasn't a part of a movie or show without making a specific effort to hear it
