I have a like-minded neighbor. Great guy - we do fireworks in front of our houses every year. Nothing crazy, but we commemorate the day, drink a few beers. It’s always fun and all the kids come out. This has been going on for years and this year, neither of us are into it.

A reasonable Republican is now a Democrat. I joined the Republican Party in 1988 when I became eligible to vote. I grew-up in a Reagan household. When all my fellow Generation X-ers were voting for Clinton in ‘92, I voted for Bush. I no longer recognize the party o joined, so here I am, a proud Dem.

I honestly think that’s why they elected an American Pope. Born in Chicago, educated here. I suspect (maybe incorrectly, who knows) that somewhere in that conclave, there was an undercurrent of “we need someone who can talk sense into the U.S. government, someone relatable.” He’s the one.
