The Conservatives have lost overall control of Surrey County Council for the first time since the 1990s after the Lib Dems won a local by-election. Voters in Surrey are backing the Liberal Democrats' community politics over the Conservatives, just as they did in the General Election.

Today’s Spending Review failed to fund the Ely Junction upgrade—a project with a £4.89 return for every £1 invested. This isn’t just a local issue—it’s a national setback. We need real investment in infrastructure that delivers real growth. The Chancellor must act now.

Graphic with a picture of Charlotte Cane, the Portcullis logo and the following text. Today’s Spending Review was a missed opportunity to invest in the infrastructure that drives regional prosperity and national resilience. The failure to include funding for the Ely Junction upgrade is a glaring omission that undermines efforts to boost nationwide growth and connectivity. Ely Junction is not just a local bottleneck—it is a national priority. Network Rail’s own Outline Business Case demonstrates a compelling economic return of £4.89 for every £1 invested. This is exactly the kind of high-impact, value-for-money project the government should be prioritising if it is serious about delivering growth. The Chancellor must start taking growth seriously. Squeezing departmental budgets even further won’t rescue public services, won’t deliver growth, and won't deliver change. Instead, ministers should be taking serious steps to kickstart economic growth, such as investing in infrastructure projects like Ely Junction that deliver real returns for communities and the economy. MP for Ely and East Cambridgeshire CHARLOTTE CANE I urge the Chancellor to commit to funding this essential upgrade without further delay. The warning couldn’t be clearer. ⚠️ Slashing the nature-friendly farming budget would be catastrophic for the nature and climate crisis, and for our long-term food security. What's more, it would leave the UK Government’s credibility on climate and nature in tatters.

A headline from The Guardian reads: “Fund for nature-friendly farming to be slashed in UK spending review.” Below it, a line of bright green tractors ploughs wide, bare furrows into a large field. The image underscores the scale of UK farming and the warning that vital support for restoring nature is about to be cut.

A little comic about desire paths.

Ok so… There’s a nice little park on a corner, and a path running directly to one edge of the park. That’s the first image, but there’s 12 other images here. In the second image, there is now a desire path running diagonally across the park. Next image, the path has been blocked by a park bench that the council has put in as a deterrent. Unfazed, in image 4 the path now deftly avoids the park bench. In images 5 and 6 the process is repeated, this time with a strategically placed bin which the desire path also avoids. Presumably in a fit of rage, the council plants an entire hedge to stop people creating new desire paths but eventually this too is defeated and a new path find a way. Finally, the council admits defeat and turns the desire path into a proper paved pathway. After a little while, a new desire path curving off this new paved pathway begins to emerge…

Infographic showing that for food, communications and clothing - the UK is cheaper than the OECD average. Despite this, poorer households in Britain pay more for housing compared to higher income households. And housing in the UK is particularly expensive compared to OECD averages. The high cost of housing, and the higher amount of their budgets that poorer households spend on this, means that the UK is relatively more expensive for poorer families than it is for the population as a whole.

We can't let British democracy turn into a plaything for overseas billionaires with short attention spans. At PMQs, I urged the Prime Minister to work with us to make sure power always sits with the voters, not wealthy foreign oligarchs.

Leaving Twitter was hands down the best decision I made last year, in terms of mental hygiene. Millions are leaving X and looking for a new home, so Zuckerberg’s “let’s make meta more of a hellscape” strategy is all the more surprising. Bluesky, you’re it. Don’t let us down.

This caught my eye - good from @lewisgoodall.com "The online right picks and chooses its concerns. Where are the calls for inquiries into the Church of England? English public schools? Or any number of British institutions and groups which have had child abuse scandals over the last decade?"

They play politics like its WWE 'sports entertainment'. Treat any 'blow-ups' between Farage and Musk (and Trump) as seriously as you would Hulk Hogan. I think Musk will happily play the heel and is doing so right now. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heel_(p...

The rich will pay to be told what they want to hear, and the very rich will pay to tell the poorest what they want them to believe.

He's a very rich man, but nothing close to a nation state. UK gov spends annually more than twice his entire net value (tied up in equity). He's only a threat as he's hacking elections with donations & data. UK gov must take urgent action to make his interference illegal & X liable for content.

Same principle applies to the scapegoating of migrants. If Labour cut migration to zero, the economic impacts would be catastrophic, in 2029, Farage would blame... immigration. Progressive politics needs to stop placating and put the right wing populists on the defence for a change.

This, from Lewis Goodall, is bang on the mark.

On the same day, The Observer reported that ministers had decided they didn’t want to face the accusation from Farage that the “establishment” was trying to rig things against him. All of these arguments are classic examples of Labour bedwetting. Do we think for a moment, that if an equivalent foreign backer, say Bill Gates, was proposing a game-changing donation to Labour, that the Conservatives or Reform would not change the rules at pace? This is how populists win. They don’t observe norms and rules, while established players do, indeed they fret about them. Moreover, Farage will always claim that the establishment is trying to rig things against him – he’s made a career out of it.
