If I think of any more I’ll post it here. I think I learned screenwriting nuts and bolts from a TEACH YOURSELF SCREENWRITING book my mum got me when I was 16. That was probably the best technical guide I could have had, would be very curious to see how it reads now.
As Joe says, the two William Goldman books are very good. Anecdotal, but that’s probably the best way to learn (especially for formatting) other than reading screenplays (as to which screenplays, that’s a whole other kettle of fish). BTW, Ronald Harwood’s ADAPTATIONS is excellent.
Almost every screenwriting out there is 99% shit with one nugget of good advice in it. I always liked McKee’s ‘Story’ but looking back after many years working on screenplays, it’s way too heavy on graphs and other wank. “Your story should be meaningful” is the best thing you should take from it.
