So it actually went up but I’ve narrowed it down to these. Which to say I’ve got about 2,300 to choose from isn’t bad. I’m only away for a week so I need to pick 5. Which ones would you take? #booksky📚
Janet Emson (@janetemson.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s an idea! I need to make sure I’m not adding any more. Or that I suddenly don’t want to read any of them.

It’s not wrong, just different to what we say over in the UK 😊
Janet Emson (@janetemson.bsky.social) reply parent
So would I 😂
Janet Emson (@janetemson.bsky.social) reply parent
No, people who had only met very recently. It’s not a major thing but it highlights to me the differences across the two countries with the same language. I often find myself looking up US terms in books that we don’t use over here. Every da: a school day 😊
Janet Emson (@janetemson.bsky.social) reply parent
We’ll have to agree to disagree 😊. It’s a term that’s not used here, it pulled me out of the story, that’s all. Nothing major in the grand scheme of things happening in the world. Have a lovely rest of your day 😊
Janet Emson (@janetemson.bsky.social) reply parent
Two different characters used the same term. I’ve seen it before not used in speech. And another example is “addicting” which wasn’t used in speech and is very rarely, if ever used where I’m from. It’s not about it being used in dialogue, it’s a transatlantic difference in language use, that’s all 😊
Janet Emson (@janetemson.bsky.social) reply parent
Not in the UK which is where I’m from. As I said it’s a difference in language between countries. The same book used “addicting”. Over here we never use that (or at least the majority don’t).
Janet Emson (@janetemson.bsky.social) reply parent
I’ve seen it quite a bit recently. Over here it’s not used, or if it is it tends to be (in my experience) by kids learning to speak for example.
Janet Emson (@janetemson.bsky.social) reply parent
I know 😊. But for example here, on accident would be something that perhaps a child said by mistake who is developing language. It pulled me out of the story because it was two adults using it.
Janet Emson (@janetemson.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m from a place where there’s a very strong regional accent so I never expect anyone to speak perfect English (written or otherwise 😊)
Janet Emson (@janetemson.bsky.social) reply parent
I know but it also helps determine how characters are perceived. I’m just used to hearing young kids saying it over here (as they learn to speak) so it pulled me out of the story to hear two 30 somethings both use it 😊
Janet Emson (@janetemson.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m from Yorkshire so I’ve heard this often 😂
Janet Emson (@janetemson.bsky.social) reply parent
To be fair this is set in the US by a US author. Eye still twitching though 😂
Janet Emson (@janetemson.bsky.social)
I’m all for books not being translated into US/UK English for each market but this tests my resolve. (Yes I do know different countries use different terms. No it’s not that much of a big deal. Yes it does make my eye twitch).
