The UK is at a very dangerous and fragile moment, I think. The BBC has instigated #BBCVerify to check facts. All good. But IMO, something much more is needed. It’s time for the BBC to show audiences how powerful think tanks, whose funding is obscure, +certain media, are creating political agendas.

Thanks Laura. I wholeheartedly agree. I love a huge proportion of the BBC output except the news and its apparent bias toward Reform shaping the current narrative without challenge. Stopped listening to their news since Brexit and have recently deleted their news app I find it sooo bad.

The year is 2025. You're living in one of the most prosperous nations in the history of humanity. You can freely acquire any kind of bread without even leaving your house. Delivery people will bring it right to your door! But you're a conservative and sourdough exists, so you're blind with rage.

Why paint a marrow bed? (1927) Well, aside from an exercise in form and light, in later life Stanley Spencer wrote: 'When I feel a certain degree of strength in my feelings and passions has been reached, I want to transform some disliked thing into something I shall love.'

Like yours my mum was very poorly at then end of her life in 2014 and I’ve still not cried. My dad died last year and I find myself welling up often and occasionally even sobbing. Grief is so very complicated and I’d say it’s fine not to cry: it’s just the way it is. Now go and make a drawing! X

Kurt Vonnegut’s definition of what makes something “art” is one of my favorites I’ve seen - from a letter to his brother in 1995.

People capable of loving some paintings or etchings or whatever can rarely do this without knowing something about the art-ist. Again, the situation is social rather than scientific. Any work of art is one halt of a conversation between two human beings, and it helps a lot to know who is talking at you. Does he or she have a reputation for seriousness, for sincerity? There are virtually no beloved or respected paintings made by persons of whom we know nothing. We can even surmise a lot about the lives of whoever did the paintings in the caves underneath Lascaux, France. So I dare to suggest that no picture can attract serious attention without a human being attached to it in the viewer's mind. If you are unwilling to attach your name to your pictures, and to say why you hope others might find them rewarding to look at, there goes the ballgame right there. Pictures are famous for their human-ness and not their picture-ness. There is also the matter of craftsmanship. Real picture lovers like to

At a time when we are losing hand skills, I can’t figure out why the uptake for this course is so poor. Robbie is a world class class cutter, great teacher and lovely man and of course Cromarty is the best place in Scotland. Contact the Cromarty Arts Trust and book your place 👌👍

So pleased with Berkswell station planters this year, great work by Berkswell Society volunteers and I suspect station staff water them occasionally 👏👏👏

Paul Nash belonged to the very diverse generation of British modern artists who went to the Slade and included Stanley Spencer, Ben Nicholson, and Dora Carrington. 'Wood on the Downs,' (c1929) features Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire; a gratifying picture of Englishness.
