my dad, too cheap to pay for a hair cut, had me cut his hair last time, but he did it himself this time, in his wheel chair with a mirror propped on his lap, using his electric clippers in his one good hand while unable to lift his chin due to spinal deformity. That’s how much he disliked my attempt
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social)
Just venting to the uninterested universe that my 84 y/o dad and 58 y/o brother believe they can not make a decision about what type of adult diapers to buy, money being no object, without my in person input.

Hope he drives safe. We don’t want the Oklahoma senator exiting through the windshield in a hurry.

Then what tradition are you talking about here? I’m not a lifelong Texan, but was here for the quorum break in 2003 when the democrats ran to Oklahoma to block redistricting. It wasn’t new then. In 2020 they gerrymandered away my opportunity to vote against Chip Roy.
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social) reply parent
🤷♂️gerrymandering is the tradition in Texas.
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social) reply parent
Republicans drew them and Republicans were defending them in court.
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, it’s not arrested as in going to jail. It’s arrested and hauled in to Austin to establish a legislative quorum.
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social) reply parent
The Supreme Court ruled in 2019, in Rucho v. Common Cause, that federal courts cannot address claims of partisan gerrymandering.

To try to be on topic with the thread, I feel like first year teachers especially need the easiest ways possible to reach out for support, and maybe, since they’re willing to enter this profession just now, it isn’t the best time for hitting them with the ethics of propping up a crappy system

Thanks for being an art teacher. We could use more visual literacy. I taught art until 2019, spending earnings on the classroom. And this year I held my nose and bought from Amazon wish lists for a couple of my former co-workers’ kids who just graduated and got their first teaching jobs.

a DHS spokesperson chose to use the word “laughable” for a response to this resignation. are taxpayers paying to get laughed at?

So he’s not really serving antivaxers. The idea is to break public health and faith in existing medical systems in general to get more customers for quacks?
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social) reply parent
Otter people. Thanks autocorrect. Perfect.
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social) reply parent
How did we get here? Did we somehow lose sight of the power of minding our own business? Why do antivaxers need the power to shut down otter people’s access to vaccines? To protect themselves from hearing that they ought to vaccinate their kids?

Surely it would have been possible to acknowledge the families’s feelings in some way - if he understood that people feel things
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social) reply parent
What’s a right answer to that question? I mean, we have heard often enough his deflection of calling the questioner nasty, evil or crazy if they ask something he doesn’t want asked. And it is a pass through question, so he’s calling angry families evil. How would a decent leader answer?
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social) reply parent
Ask the real questions. What will the cuts do going forward.
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social) reply parent
I was raised by a state government bureaucrat. I can’t help thinking they do worthwhile jobs like getting rural fire departments equipment and lobbying for the volunteer fire fighters.

Meanwhile American citizen criminals are doing what? Filling vacancies?
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social) reply parent
I feel blessed to have had coworkers who were willing to err on the side of caution to save me from erring on the side of not wanting to err.
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social) reply parent
NYT says staffing vacancies lead to questions if it was harder to forecast the event. In fact the event was forecast and state officials mobilized resources two days ahead. Looks like NWS can actually do it with reduced staff. Trump/DOGE is reprehensible, but this flood tragedy isn’t where it shows.
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social) reply parent
This round of flooding was forecast, predicted and Texas state government mobilized resources and notified local officials ahead of it. Prediction isn’t the problem. It’s so predictable that people get flood warned every time it rains. Can the Feds fund or defund the local’ folk’s complacency?
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social) reply parent
This disaster isn’t down to a failure in prediction or forecasting. We can question what local officials did with that forecast information and whether the emergency plans and procedures at the camp stood a chance of meeting the moment, but none of that is on Texas voters.
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social) reply parent
The flooding was forecast and predicted on July 3.
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social) reply parent
I want to see trustworthy reporting on that camp’s emergency preparedness policies, if they had anny way to evacuate hundreds of kids and what they normally do down by that river under a flash flood watch.

Texans didn’t vote for a tropical storm to dump 12 inches of rain all at once in Kerr County any more than Californians voted for wildfire in LA county.

It would look suspicious for Abbot and the Texas reps to be taking a lot of gold to the pawn shop.
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social) reply parent
I think the idea is for Texas lawmakers to have a way to launder the gold and silver bribes they get.
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social) reply parent
Think it’s more like a lawmaker gets a bribe from a foreign government in the form of gold bars, then the state of Texas launders it.
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social) reply parent
Greg Abbott already vetoed the Texas bill for summer feeding for school kids. He did it last week because the cut was in the federal bill.
jaspersu.bsky.social (@jaspersu.bsky.social) reply parent
I feel like the idea is to prevent Medicaid from being any use in order to help them get away with cutting it from the budget.

I just figured out, after a frustrating conversation with my Trump-voting cousin, that to her “fraud, waste and corruption” what means tax money paying for stuff she disapproves of, while I was thinking it meant illegal stuff like bribes, embezzlement, misappropriations and mismanagement of funds.
