There is still a ton of math to do with small groups, rotations, efficiency, compactness, and on and on. It would be wonderful if the world made more space for us to socially care, if there were more room for "popular math magazines." Read Quanta; read Wired, I guess. www.wired.com/story/for-al...
J.D. Connor (@jdconnor.bsky.social) reply parent
And so, and so, you can now go to Alice Miller’s Breakout Room Allocation schedule Tool (BoRAT) and submit your problem—or even submit your email list, and, voila! Your optimized breakout schedule. breakoutroom.pythonanywhere.com/allocate/
J.D. Connor (@jdconnor.bsky.social) reply parent
Anyway, only when the occasion arose in force did a group really push for a solution. That occasion? Covid-driven zoom breakout rooms.
J.D. Connor (@jdconnor.bsky.social) reply parent
But quintets? Sextets? Get cracking. You could brute force it out, but generalization was elusive. It is *amazing* to me that there can be any unknown math involving things less than 100. But there are!
J.D. Connor (@jdconnor.bsky.social) reply parent
Solutions for three are called “Kirkman Triples” after the guy who sent in the problem to “popular math magazine” “Lady's and Gentleman's Diary” or "Steiner Triples" after the guy who solved it first. Golfers play in foursomes, so there are solutions for quartets.
J.D. Connor (@jdconnor.bsky.social) reply parent
Turns out this is a version of what is called the “Social Golfer Problem.” (Math people know this; I was learning as I went) In the literature it goes back to 1850 and started with 15 schoolgirls in groups of 3. There were some solutions; there was progress; there was no general algorithm.
J.D. Connor (@jdconnor.bsky.social)
Here is a nifty thing. Math is one of those disciplines where you never know what simple-sounding problems are “unsolved.” Say you want to introduce everyone to everyone else at a conference of 50 people in groups of 5. How many rounds do you need? How do you minimize the overlaps?

Thus Kant finds us propelled—our word has been thrown—and in thrownness we veil-in-ink the RAV4fold. We are the BLAckbridge that links and divides—that "Connecticuts" us to and from language. The to and the fro, the Aristotelian metapherien, the transporter. We are the metaphysical truckers.
J.D. Connor (@jdconnor.bsky.social) reply parent
What, indeed, lies trapped in that net? A blackness, a whiteness at once, which is to say, a squid [ein Tintenfisch, literally "inkfish"—tr.] A bridge between inkblack and squidwhite, a BLAckbridge [RAVensbrück—tr.] that means "you" toward the net of niceness and escape at once.
J.D. Connor (@jdconnor.bsky.social)
...thus the LLM elision (the Elision) of the copula in the imperative—"should still nice"—links the net of niceness [das Nett—tr.] to the unmeaning of meanness, to the inmost soul of meaning [Gemeinungseele—tr.] and thence to the four-wheel-drive fourfold—Martin Heidegger, "On the Tedeschi Truck"

The massive nostalgia for good brutalist architecture is utterly understandable. I love the stuff; I got to work in Art & Arch; I got to work in Corbu's Carpenter Center. The spaces are vivifying. But I'm glad I never had to take care of it.
J.D. Connor (@jdconnor.bsky.social) reply parent
Sure, the passage from parlor to patio in a brutalist estate is elegant and open. Rowley Way is how social housing might aspire to greatness. Robin Hood Gardens was targeted, couldn't adapt, was loved and hated, and was bulldozed.
J.D. Connor (@jdconnor.bsky.social) reply parent
What is true for monumental buildings—departments, libraries, museums, Boston City Hall—is even more true of domestic spaces. Bathrooms, kitchens, HVAC, glazing: often far beyond what homeowners can expect to maintain. Also, wifi and cell service sucks inside.
J.D. Connor (@jdconnor.bsky.social) reply parent
When they finally decided to bring it back to its original glory, Gwathmey essentially bolted a whole 'nother building onto it to contain the service core—new HVAC, elevators, fire. Not exactly elegant!
J.D. Connor (@jdconnor.bsky.social) reply parent
For years, the Yale A&A was allowed to deteriorate with drop ceilings, false sheetrock walls, cobbled conduit—because there wasn't money or time to do it right.
J.D. Connor (@jdconnor.bsky.social) reply parent
But when a brutalist building needs care, things get very difficult and very expensive. HVAC is a nightmare. Recabling to upgrade wiring or load in better comms is concussive and pricey. A leaky window or *anything* that pivots? So much artisanal work.
J.D. Connor (@jdconnor.bsky.social) reply parent
The virtues of the concrete—clarity, commitment, low maintenance, openness when done right, texture when desired—are heightened by the right sort of textiles, as in the lecture hall in Rudolph's Yale Art & Arch
J.D. Connor (@jdconnor.bsky.social)
This image of the wonderful light and geometry of Habitat 67 gets at much of what I love about brutalism, and much of what I resist about it. Short version: brutalist buildings can't learn in the ways that Stuart Brand said buildings should.
