There is still a ton of math to do with small groups, rotations, efficiency, compactness, and on and on. It would be wonderful if the world made more space for us to socially care, if there were more room for "popular math magazines." Read Quanta; read Wired, I guess. www.wired.com/story/for-al...

And so, and so, you can now go to Alice Miller’s Breakout Room Allocation schedule Tool (BoRAT) and submit your problem—or even submit your email list, and, voila! Your optimized breakout schedule. breakoutroom.pythonanywhere.com/allocate/

Anyway, only when the occasion arose in force did a group really push for a solution. That occasion? Covid-driven zoom breakout rooms.

Breakout Group Allocation Schedules and the Social Golfer Problem with Adjacent Group Sizes. Alice Miller; Matthew BarrORCID, William KavanaghORCID, Ivaylo ValkovORCID and Helen C. PurchaseORCID School of Computing Science, University of Glasgow, Glasgow G12 8RZ, UK * Author to whom correspondence should be addressed. Symmetry 2021, 13(1), 13; https://doi.org/10.3390/sym13010013 Submission received: 3 December 2020 / Revised: 14 December 2020 / Accepted: 15 December 2020 / Published: 23 December 2020 The current pandemic has led schools and universities to turn to online meeting software solutions such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams. The teaching experience can be enhanced via the use of breakout rooms for small group interaction. Over the course of a class (or over several classes), the class will be allocated to breakout groups multiple times over several rounds. It is desirable to mix the groups as much as possible, the ideal being that no two students appear in the same group in more than one round. In this paper, we discuss how the problem of scheduling balanced allocations of students to sequential breakout rooms directly corresponds to a novel variation of a well-known problem in combinatorics (the social golfer problem), which we call the social golfer problem with adjacent group sizes. We explain how solutions to this problem can be obtained using constructions from combinatorial design theory and how they can be used to obtain good, balanced breakout room allocation schedules. We present our solutions for up to 50 students and introduce an online resource that educators can access to immediately generate suitable allocation schedules.

But quintets? Sextets? Get cracking. You could brute force it out, but generalization was elusive. It is *amazing* to me that there can be any unknown math involving things less than 100. But there are!

Solutions for three are called “Kirkman Triples” after the guy who sent in the problem to “popular math magazine” “Lady's and Gentleman's Diary” or "Steiner Triples" after the guy who solved it first. Golfers play in foursomes, so there are solutions for quartets.

The page of Lady's and Gentleman's Diary where Kirkman asks how to arrange schoolgirls in groups of 3.

Turns out this is a version of what is called the “Social Golfer Problem.” (Math people know this; I was learning as I went) In the literature it goes back to 1850 and started with 15 schoolgirls in groups of 3. There were some solutions; there was progress; there was no general algorithm.

Here is a nifty thing. Math is one of those disciplines where you never know what simple-sounding problems are “unsolved.” Say you want to introduce everyone to everyone else at a conference of 50 people in groups of 5. How many rounds do you need? How do you minimize the overlaps?

One of the solid Chomsky bits was to cite WSJ economic news reportage because, as he saw it, whatever nonsense the capitalist class dispensed at election time they had to tell themselves the truth about money. How's that looking?

WSJ Markets AM newsletter by Aaron Back showing a stipple picture of this dude and the hed The implications are concerning. This means the “Liberation Day” tariffs declared in April and negotiated over the past several months, as well as sector-level tariffs on things like autos, steel and so on, aren’t being fully felt yet. Goldman’s economists figure that consumers had absorbed just 22% of total tariff costs through June, but this will rise to 67% by October. In short, don’t take too much comfort from the relatively subdued inflation seen so far. The real tariff bill is yet to arrive.

Sure, but the disclosure "This reporter's trip to the Nürburgring to drive the new BMW was paid for by BMW" is legible to all. "Winnie slipped me a couple hundred bucks to write say nice things about Eric" has never been seen in print.
