In my despairing moments, I worry any social progress we've made over the last fifty years has been made entirely to separate those with money and power from what were their fellow outlaws...so we could be gay, safe, and high while the oppressors could get back to work.
The Sixties happened because the middle class wanted to not be drafted, wanted to be out of the closet, and wanted to smoke weed. They came together with people of color and the poor to fight oppression. It's 2025: there's no draft, no closet, no weed laws...and almost no middle class left.

Interestingly, halfway through my re-play through of BOTW I was all “fuck yes I gotta get a Switch 2 and play all this in higher resolution!” So far, #reTOTK has been “eh, I’m fine. Maybe when the Switch 2’s library gets more robust.”
I mean, this is just me being my usual conspiracy oriented self—but it would make a lot of sense if Nintendo had planned to launch the Switch 2 earlier but selling *a ton* of new consoles during the pandemic made them decide to fees that beast for a while longer. #reTOTK
Also of note: I’d bet money BOTW was the first release on Switch 1.0 and TOTK was supposed to be the first on Switch 2.0 because on 1.0, TOTK is wheezing, frame-rate addled mess. #reTOTK
More #reTOTK observations: I wonder if the Master Mode DLC for BOTW was super-successful? Because (a) I’m dying *a lot* y’all and (b) every fourth shrine is “we took away all your stuff; now use your wits to defeat a half-dozen armed enemies.”
Ultimately, an American in their mid-thirties has been marinated their entire life in a culture of cruelty, greed, and a culture that prizes self-sufficiency to the point of sociopathology. But never to move outside that? Never to have experienced anything that would make you question that? Fuck.
But to hear it from someone in their thirties is genuinely gross—like watching an adult eat with their hands or something. If I have any pity left over for the people whose lives they’re destroying for personal gain, I’ll try and have for them, too.

In a way, it’s a tribute to the gameplay philosophy of TOTK (and also BOTW): whichever play style suits you best, you can win with it. But it also leaves me wondering, just a bit, if #reTOTK is gonna underwhelm on a playthrough. Fleeing those fucking hands the 1st time thru was scary & great!
I mean, in my replay of BOTW, I also won a fight with two guardians where a yiga archer and three skeleton critters also showed up…but that was late game. I haven’t even been to the Depths yet in TOTK! #reTOTK
That last bit still kinda floors me because I only have four hearts, 1.66 stamina wheels, and no major weapons. 100% the kind of thing I could only do by dropping 500 hours into the game when it came out. #reTOTK
But boy does the game get much more fun once you can survive fucking around! I successfully got to a sky shrine, explored a bunch of caves, and even, uh, beat my first Phantom Ganon?! #reTOTK
Day three! Got the glider but wow do they put you through useless fetch quests before they give it to you…and all for a (not especially interesting) cut scene plot point. Boo. #reTOTK
Yeah, I get it—it is definitely denser than Breath, though you can still cut loose relatively early…but I think you should just re-start it at that point? I don’t think that was especially painful, especially since it’s such a “fuck around and find out” game.

OK, day two! (1) argh, I forgot how much more this game keeps you on leash--I didn't go to see Purah so I don't have the glider so I'm just dying all over the place. (2) But they kept the jaunty piano music when you're riding the horse. Can't mess with perfection. #reTOTK

And this, I suspect, is a topic that will come up in the re-playthrough: how much the devs built TOTK to be "fun as hell" for a certain type of player, and how the gacha is one of the most successful areas at crossing over between that type of player and me. #reTOTK
The same way I wish Nintendo had just used built out the horses into their own sequel/DLC, I'd jump at the chance to play a TOTK DLC where everything is accessible by gacha, with different gacha only taking different items. It'd be fun as hell. #reTOTK
That said, it's not all bummers! In Sky Island, you encounter caves--which are a fabulous addition to the landscape, so much so I was confused in my re-replay of BOTW when they weren't there--and the Zonai gacha machine, which are fun and addictive (and underused). #reTOTK
I finally got off the island and back down to Hyrule, and the music has opened up--as I suspect it's supposed to help you feel like your world has dramatically opened up--but the effect of the early repetitive cue remains. Things feel new but also a bit stale? #reTOTK
I think the music for BOTW was basically perfect--Link was alone, so most of the music was just a solitary piano. Depending on how long you take on the Sky Island intro, it's just one minor orchestral cue, over and over. #reTOTK

Yeah, I’ll be curious to see how it feels on the replay—on the one hand, the dark world is a stunning achievement that I spent probably hundreds of hours in. On the other hand, my after-the-fact impressions are that it was too empty and undercooked.

It’s a re-playthrough and I played the crap out of it first time through so feel free to spoil! I just made it through the first two shrines—Ultrahand and Fuse—so not far at all.
Work calls, so I hope to get into it more later but.. Let's say the choice to use a single limited melancholic music cue throughout the entire level literally sets the tone for the game. And the tone is "Should I adjust my SSRIs?" #reTOTK
For example: -I am very leisurely making my way through the Sky Islands "level" which functions similarly to BOTW's marvelous Great Plateau "level": it's huge, it's open world, but it's also the training level that boxes you in until you've learned the basics. -It feels...miserly? #reTOTK
Parameters: the #reTOTK is on my OLED Switch b/c reading about Switch 2 upgrades to it & BOTW got me all hepped up. -I just finished re-playthrough of BOTW. -I'm not sure I would've survived the pandemic w/o BOTW so it's somewhere between a fave & a personal saint. -Biases will ensue.
I guess this would be the first skeet in my #reTOTK

This series has been amazing for so many reasons Matt, but part of it is you making me realize just how flouncy the apocalypse could be!
LRTs: Yeah, Nazis tend to be polite and considerate around those they perceive to be of higher status, and save their hatred for those they get away with hating. In this way they are cowards. Always watch how someone treats someone they perceive to be of lower status.

Ya know, there's plenty of other things to recommend it, but I adore that Tears of the Kingdom opens like something out of a Lucio Fulci movie.
I wish I could agree! The insanity of Moby Dick is Melville packs tons of killer hooks into his narrative then makes you read eight pages about skinning blubber. A demonic murder clown would only add chapters about greasepaint, fools in the Bible, and the uses of ambergris.
