Let's put that Blueskyism to work: I'm in search of a gig graphic designer who's available for a teeny tiny project that I could probably complete with AI but refuse to use AI to complete. My DMs are open - if you know of such a person, please send recommendations my way!

Florida raves about their cornucopia of school choices and praises teachers who start their own microschool. I wonder how those teachers plan on handling sexual harassment from parents. Or sick days.

One of the points I try to bring up in 1:1 conversations about school choice is that each added level of choice means one more level of decision-making and responsibility for those involved. This thread speaks to transportation.

Just saw a new book is about to be released that links drops in student learning to "adult culture wars" and I am tempted to buy it if only for this last chapter. Curious if it will be hate or love read.

In this chapter, I conclude with a new framework for how to think about reforms designed to improve student academic achievement. My proposal focuses on (1) encouraging voters to care more about student outcomes and (2) shifting political power to adults with the most skin in the game in order to (3) try to align the electoral and political incentives of office holders with the interests of students. Specifically, I recommend holding school board elections “on-cycle” (in November of even years), making student achievement growth information more salient to both voters and parents, and increasing high-quality school choice options. Overall, I argue that future reforms should be evaluated based on how they impact student achievement, not how adults feel about them. Drawing on recent research on housing policy, I conclude that more democracy is not always better and that we should be open to reforms that modestly reduce local control if such reforms are likely to help students.

This is absolutely correct AND teachers are bombarded with the message that if a parent's child does not like school or finds it boring, it's a problem for the teacher to fix. It so often seems that the real challenge at hand is convincing parents their child is a child; nothing more, nothing less.

this iconic advertising copywriter named Kathy Hepinstall Parks died over the weekend and I wanted to share something from her website I thought Bluesky would like

Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me? Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

I think this is my favorite quote from the NY Times piece with 12 teachers, mostly because the speaker defies stereotypes of who might say this.

I think the biggest challenge is finding a way to interest the kids into wanting to do this. We have to figure out a way to come around the kids and trick them into wanting to learn.

LOL! Ha! I feel like that picture gets into @triangleman.bsky.social's #vehiclechat territory; are all markers pens?

I'm ride or die for 6 in blue, black, and red. As a left-handed editor, it's the only pen style I feel bummed when I lose.

Starting watching this on a whim and ten minutes in, I am in awe. Of the people, of the founders, of humanity. I am terrified of what's going to happen in the next 80.

I listened to an interview with a member of Congress (R) who seems to be trying hard to do his job & represent his constituents. At point he mentioned a few of Trump's wild comments and said people should just ignore them; Focus on just the "real" or "serious" stuff. I'm curious how he reads this.

Some solid advice from Chanda here. If you’re interested in posting your blog in a way that feels like it’s yours, I’d start from this thread and work your way down. (BTW, I’m using WordPress.)

The statement, "in 100 years no one will know the difference between a booty call and a butt dial and that's why we need historians" (or something like that) has been running through my head all week and damned if this didn't pop up today on @askhistorians.bsky.social.

Is there a difference between keeping house and housekeeping when it's listed as an occupation in the US census records?

A volunteer did help me make walk sheets which basic mapped out routes I could walk or ride my bike. Volunteering to help canvas doesn't have to mean walking with a candidate. (But I still need to interact with the app before and after each door to check names and enter information.)

(Also! Canvassing is so much easier with someone else. Having to stop and check the app each time myself means half as many doors knocked. Considering volunteering for a local candidate!)

Heading out to the door to do a canvassing shift (for myself, which is weird and fun!) and love the points in this thread.

Chapman has announced its own AI platform which provides subscriber access to all the various big algorithms. To see what students will be dealing with, I tested it on my own bibliography. Folks, it doesn't just make up citations, it provides real DOIs for them that link to unrelated publications.

Screenshot of three fake citations of articles I supposedly co-authored. Two have DOI links. The result of clicking on the first link, supposedly leading to my (non-existent) article

Firing and demoralizing feminized jobs as enemies of the state while brazenly bribing men with violent jobs that almost instantly puts them into the middle of middle class is very basic gendered warfare. Fulfilling the manosphere’s promise.
