Found in the prairies of Manitoba, Lambert’s Locoweed grows 6-18 pink-purple flowers on a hairy, leafless stem. The leaves of this plant are also hairy. It is named “locoweed” because it produces toxic chemicals that cause strange behaviours in cattle who fed on it. #WildflowerWednesday

If we made low-paid, labour-intensive and critically important jobs that absolutely need to be done *good* jobs (living wages, benefits, pensions, some control over schedules) you'd create more opportunity, less need for PSE to prove you're good enough for a good job, and get the needed jobs done.

Two sets of numbers are yelling, but not about the same story. Unemployment numbers are up because of trade disputes and generally slowing economic conditions due to uncertainty. Newcomer numbers are up because Canadians don't want to work at generally lower-paid, more labour-intensive jobs.

In June 2025 there were 1.5M ppl with work permits and .5M with study permits. That's more people with work permits than a year ago (1.4M) but fewer people with study permits (546.5K this June compared to 695.6K last June) An almost perfect offset, so same # of temporary residents.

I tell this story a lot but when I was a director of a social housing assoc, we visited a 'wethouse' that housed older people whose bodies could not survive detox. One woman said she thought her dad would die on the streets but instead she could have lunch with him and bring his grandkids.

A curious thing to visit in SK: the Sukanen Ship. Built by Finnish homesteader Tom Sukanen he planned to escape the 1930s dust bowl by sailing the Saskatchewan River to HudsonBay, back home to Finland. After 7 yrs of building he’d lost the strength to get it to water.Hope dies hard on the prairies!
